i tapped my foot impatiently against the floor, glancing at the clock for what felt like the hundredth time. drew had promised me a special date night, something we had both been looking forward to for weeks. i had spent hours getting ready, putting on makeup and a cute outfit, and now i sat on the couch, waiting for him to come home."come on, drew," i muttered to myself.
as the clock struck 7:00, i leaned my back against the couch, crossing my arms. the anticipation from earlier had shifted into disappointment. i picked up my phone, but there was still nothing from him.
by 7:15, i found myself pacing the length of the living room, glancing out the window to see if he was pulling into the driveway. the streetlights flickered on as the evening faded, but the driveway remained empty. my heart sank further as i took a deep breath, feeling defeated.
minutes turned into an hour, and finally, feeling crushed i sighed heavily. "i can't wait any longer," i whispered to myself. with a sinking heart, i swapped my cute outfit for pajamas and wiped off my makeup. crawling into bed, i pulled the covers over my head, trying to block out the disappointment.
i was still buried in the blankets when i heard the front door swing open. "y/n?" drew's voice called out, echoing through the quiet house.
no response came from me.
my stomach twisted with a mix of disappointment and anger as he made his way into the bedroom. i felt him sit on the edge of the bed, gently pulling back the covers to reveal my face.
"hi," he said softly, concern etched across his features.
"hi," i groveled, my voice barley above a whisper. "you're home."
"i'm so sorry," he said, guilt flooding through him as he took in my disheveled appearance. "i thought i could make it back in time, but filming went on longer—"
i cut him off, sitting up. "you're late, drew. i waited for over an hour. i tried texting you."
"i know, and i hate that i made you wait," he replied, running a hand through his hair. "my phone died, and i didn't get any of your messages."
i looked away, tears welling in my eyes. "it's fine. i just...thought tonight was going to be special. and it took me forever to find the right pair of shoes."
"it was—...it is special," he insisted, grabbing my hand. "i was looking forward to tonight. i swear if i had known i was running this late, i would have found a way to let you know."
a heavy silence hung between us and i struggled to comprehend it all, despite me still feeling the hurt of having to wait around for him.
"please, let me make it up to you," he said, desperately.
i wiped my eyes, my resolve softening. "i don't know, drew. i just wanted to spend time with you."
without another word, he bolted from the room. i heard the front door open and close, confusion setting in. what was he doing?
a moment later, he returned, breathless, with a handful of wildflowers, their roots still caked in dirt. his cheeks were flushed with a mix of excitement and embarrassment. "they're a little...dirty."
covering my mouth with my hand to stifle a laugh, i asked, "where did you get those from?"
"don't worry about it," he chuckled, his eyes darting away. "now, give me two seconds. i'll be right back."
he winked before disappearing out the back door. a few minutes passed, and my curiosity grew as i heard him shuffling around outside. finally he came back in with a satisfied grin. "okay, come with me."
before i could ask what he did, he took my hand and dragged me towards the back door. "drew, where are we going?" i laughed.
"you'll see." he said, leading me outside.
as we stepped into the backyard, i was greeted by the soft glow of twinkling lights strung overhead and a cozy blanket spread on the grass. he had laid out two glasses and a bottle of wine, a gentle breeze rustling the leaves around us.
"surprise!" he exclaimed, gesturing to our makeshift setup. "i thought he could spend the rest of our night under the stars."
my jaw dropped, and my anger from earlier had dissipated. "okay, this is way better than a dinner reservation," i admitted, my heart swelling.
"exactly," he said with a grin as he poured us each a glass of wine. "just you, me, and the moon."
as he settled down beside me on the blanket, i leaned my head on his shoulder, feeling content and happy. "you really know how to make up for a missed date," i said softly.
"anything for my girl," he replied, wrapping an arm around me as we gazed up at the stars.
i glanced at him with a mischievous smile, poking him lightly in the side. "this is perfect, but just so you know, if you ever miss another date, i'm hiring someone to hunt you down."
he laughed, pulling me closer, "deal. i'll never be late again."
"you better not be," i teased, narrowing my eyes playfully. "i've got connections."
"i don't doubt it," he grinned, pressing a kiss to my forehead. "i promise, no more tardiness."
"good," i replied, snuggling into him. "because next time, i'm expecting flowers you didn't steal from our neighbors yard."
