So in this AU, Eli is already in his 40s so he wasn't in the academy when they met. He was the one running the family business. Thrawn was this excited Chiss in his 20s who was sent as a peace offering to the Empire for assistance against the Grysks (Thrawn doesn't know). They meet in Lysatra at one of Thrawn's missions.
