CHAPTER 1
JELLYBEANS 'N CIGARSIt was early morning, the world fading into the background as Gwenn sat beneath the tree, absorbed in the book in her hands, her pink earphones snug in her ears. For a little while, nothing existed — not even the flesh-eating monsters that plagued the world — except the words on the page.
Gwenn furrowed her eyebrows, a small frown tugging at her lips as she hummed along the music while reading the book. Too engrossed in her reading, she didn't notice her brother approaching nor hear him calling her name. Glenn crouched down next to her and pulled an earphone from her ear.
"I'm going on a run." he muttered. Gwenn merely hummed in acknowledgment, closing her book and shutting off her Walkman. She stood up, dusting off her pants, ready to take off when Glenn grabbed her upper arm.
"Hey, said I'm going on a run. Not we." he rephrased his words, giving her a look.
An amused smile tugged at her lips as she looked at him as if he'd just said something ridiculous. He should be used to this by now; every time he went on a run, she was right there with him. She never let her twin brother go alone. No way.
So whenever he tried to get her to stay behind, she would just laugh, all the while getting her weapons ready. At least he tried, right?
By the time the twins were set to leave, Shane Walsh approached and gave Glenn a list of everything they needed to find. And it was an awful lot. Gwenn internally groaned and rolled her eyes. She thought the man was quite good-looking when she first met him, but the second he opened his mouth, her opinion soured. She couldn't stand him.
Shane turned to her and patted her shoulder, a tight-lipped smile on his face. "Be careful out there, Gwenn. Things go south, you ditch everything and just focus on getting back alive."
Oh my God please get your hands off me.
Gwenn flashed him an awkward smile and nodded. Shane chuckled as he squeezed her shoulder, making her eye twitch. He never heard her voice and often wondered what it would take to draw her out, and he was yet to succeed. In fact, almost everyone in camp had never heard her speak — except for the kids sometimes, and of course her twin.
They all thought she was mute, but Glenn and the kids knew otherwise. She was just really, really shy and preferred to keep to herself.
"There's nothing more precious than your lives, got it?"
Gwenn let out a whistle, and her black Doberman dashed over to her in an instant. With that, the twins took off, the dog hot on their tails.
They reached the dead city in no time. The twins were quick on their feet, and Glenn knew the way — hell, he might even have the maps memorized in his head. That's why it was always the two of them sent on runs to scavenge; they knew the ins and outs of the city. They were quiet and fast.
