The cool night began to settle in. The moon high in the sky, shinning white light over every surface of earth. It was a full moon tonight, and it was October 31st. Halloween was right in the face of the earth, and morr present than ever. Like any other Halloween of the year. Trick or treating was going on in every neighborhood. Doorbells ringing, children running and giggle. Occasionally screams. All the sounds of Halloween.
The three of them were dressed in their Halloween costumes. Huddled around in a circle on the hardwood floor Trading different candy with one another.
"Do you have any more Smarties's?"
Cassandra spoke up, looking up at Lauren, or Laura, then down at the floor. Piles of candy organized in different categories. Where Lauren was scattering around for Smarties. Cassandra was sporting a mage outfit. Staff at her side, dirty shirt and pants, and a dirty brown cloak that covered her shoulders. And drapped down onto the floor. Matching the old feel of a mage. Sitting on her knees as she watched Lauren look through her pile of candy.
They had previously gone trick or treating. So, they had gotten many sweets. All kinds on the spectrum.
Lauren was wearing a hot dog costume. The hot dog was a bright red with the small squiggle of yellow mustard on top. The buns surrounded them, giving the sight of an All American Hot Dog. Lauren's head peaked out of the hotdog, making her look bald when she really wasn't. Lauren continued to shuffle through her pile. Looking over the small packets of Skittles, Hershey's, M&M's, etc.
And the last one, Margot, sat on the other side of them. The three of them took up a triangular form together. Margot was wearing a purple coat, blue button up, and green vest. Sitting criss cross. Her hair was clearly sprayed intensely with green hair spray from the local Halloween store. Sporting her own version of a Joker outfit.
"Here,"
Lauren replied, her hand pushing the Smarties in Cassandra's direction. Cassandra quickly recognized this proposal, and quickly moved the pile of Kit-Kats in Lauren's direction. Kit-Kats were her favorite.
"Deal?"
"Deal."
The two of them shook hands. Then taking their fair pairs of candy. Hearing the wrappers scraping against the hardwood floor. The two of them observed their candies, they began to put everything into their own piles. Satisfied by the contents of the piles.
"What should we do now?"
Lauren spoke up, looking at both Cassandra and Margot. They had just finished trading candies, so there wasn't much left to do with the candies now. Well, besides eating them that is.
"Well, my mom isn't home. Just my dad, probably snoring in the basement. So we can do anything..."
Cassandra recalls, looking for signs of her mother. Which there weren't. Not that she had been expecting her mother to appear. Her mother occasionally did book clubs, and the book club had just changed around their schedule. So, she was out late...
"Oh! How about we mess with that Ouija board!?"
Cassandra spoke up, excitement at the thought. The other two got excited. Margot's eyes perked up, and Lauren just looked over at Cassandra.
Margot had found a way to obtain the ouija board. She had taken it to the sleepover. Though, knowing Margot's slight demonic background, they had a couple guesses as to how she had gotten the board.
"Sure, why not?"
Lauren spoke, getting up from the ground. Cassandra followed, and Margot did the same. They all rushed up the stairs. The loud thumps followed all the way up. The night dark as it has ever been. Giving that haunting feel. They slammed the door to Cassandra's room and turned on the lights
The room was a bit messy, but they all expected it to seem that way. Cassandra began to looked around her room, trying to remember where she has hidden the box from any adult.
"Found it!"
She yelled, pulling out the box from under her bed. The sound of shuffling could be heard from the inside of the box. The box was brown, the size as any board game box. The cover was a picture of two sets of hands on the triangular piece. With the word "Ouija" above the hands. A very basic and bland cover for the box. Lauren grinned at it, excited for what's to come.
"Margot, you know how this kind of stuff works... Lead the way,"
Cassandra held up the box to Margot. Almost as if it was an offering to some sort of unknown entity. Margot grabbed onto it. Looking at the box before sitting down. She sat down on the heart of rug. She opened the box to be met with the ouija board itself and the triangle piece. All you really needed for communicating with spirits, ghosts, and any sorts of non-visible beings.
"Do we got candles?"
Margot asked, looking up at Cassandra. Cassandra nodded.
That's when it all began.
