                          Chapter Six: Model Life

                                  Nikolai Hall

——————————————————————————————

I wake up to the sharp sound of my phone going off. I squeeze my eyes shut against the bright light coming through the curtains. It's still early, but I know I have to answer the call. With a sigh I grab my phone from the bedside table and see that Alex is calling. "Hey, what's going on?" I ask in a sleepy voice. "Good morning, Kai! You missed something," Alex says enthusiastically. I can hear the excitement in his voice, but I can't remember what was so important. "What then?" I ask as I roll over in bed, hoping I don't have to hear more than necessary. "We made a conversation and appointment with someone, and I think there's something very interesting going on with her." he says. I frown, still confused. "Appointment? For what?" I try to concentrate, but I have trouble organizing my thoughts. "That girl, Elvira! You know, that girl who helped Kyra during the fashion show. She has so much potential!" Alex talks at a breakneck pace, but his enthusiasm is starting to irritate me a bit. I'm not fully awake yet. "Alex, I don't understand. What does this have to do with me?" "Well, I think she can be something. And I want you to give her a chance. You know we are always looking for new talent." I sigh. "Okay, but I'm not really in the mood to talk about this. It's early." After a few minutes of further talking about Elvira, I suddenly hear a click on the other end of the line. Alex hung up without saying goodbye. I drop my phone on the bed and wrap myself back in the covers. What a morning.

Fifteen minutes later I hear noises from downstairs. The door falls open and I recognize the voices of Alex and Olive. They're early again, as always. I get up, rub the sleepy feeling from my eyes, and walk to the living room. When I enter, I see Olive already looking around while Alex spreads out on the couch. "You look like you just came out of a cave," he grins. "And you're talking about my appearance?" I answer with a raised eyebrow. "What are you doing so early?"Olive turns around and smiles. "We just wanted to fill you in on what happened. We really think we have found something special." I sigh, but I'm secretly curious. "Tell me." They look at each other, and I know they have something to say. The day isn't over yet, but I can already feel that it's going to be a long one. I sink onto the couch and look at Alex and Olive. "What exactly is going on with those girls?" I ask, trying to remember where I know Elvira from. "I know who Elvira is, but who is Lexi?" Olive leans forward and puts her hands in her lap. "Lexi is Elvira's best friend. She is really focused on modeling and sees that as her future. But Elvira? He is more interested in design and creation."

"So you're saying Elvira doesn't even want to model?" I ask, wondering why they are with us. "Exactly," Alex answers, taking a sip of his coffee. "But we invited them today for a orientation day at the office. Olive and I want to show them what we do, and maybe Elvira can get involved somehow, even if she doesn't want to be a model." I nod, but I still don't quite understand why this is relevant to me. "Why do you want me there? I'm just a model, not their mentor." Olive raises her hand, as if she has a brilliant idea. "Because you made a good impression on her, Nikolai! You looked at her during the fashion show. There was something about the way she responded to you that stood out." "Wait a minute," I say, thinking back to that evening. Elvira had an aura of innocence and sincerity that really intrigued me. "So you guys think I can help her or something? But she is not interested in modeling." "That makes it just as interesting!" Alex leans forward. "She's different. And maybe you can teach her something about the world she's not in. Plus, if Lexi has a dream to become a model, she could use some inspiration." I shake my head and try to shake off the idea of them. "Don't know. I'm here to work, not to coach." Olive looks at me with a sincere look. "But don't you think it would be nice to do something different? The fashion world can be so focused on appearance, but we often forget the stories of the people behind the models. Elvira could be that story. And Lexi may get an opportunity she never expected." I sigh and lean back in my chair. "Okay, suppose I agree. What exactly should I do?"Alex smiles and claps his hands. "Perfect! You don't have to do much. Just talk to them a bit, show them how the agency works, and maybe give them a few tips on how to handle being in the spotlight." "And maybe," Olive adds with a wink, "you can even encourage Elvira to be a little creative with fashion. I think she would like that." I nod, still conflicted. "I'll think about it, but I can't promise I'll like it." "That's enough for now," says Alex. "Let's go! We have to pick them up on time." Olive stands up, and I follow her lead.
