Maeve Rose and Aaron Amberson had been together for three years, navigating the highs and lows of their relationship. Aaron, infamous for his past, was known everywhere he went, and not in a good way. His history with numerous women often left him blamed for their breakups. However, with Maeve, Aaron found a sense of peace; his chaotic life settled in her presence. She was his solace, and he took pride in loving her unconditionally—though pride often precedes a fall.
In their first year of dating, Maeve cheated on Aaron. They broke up, but the tension between them never dissipated. They got back together not too long after, and as always, Aaron was forgiving. In their second year, she cheated again. This time, instead of breaking up with her, Aaron decided to give her a taste of her own medicine. He immediately started a relationship with Nadia Imber which drove Maeve mad. Nadia was like a dream: the two were very close, best friends even—but something about Maeve still lingered in Aaron's mind. Months went by, and the two had no contact. He was blocked on everything, yet she was all he could think about.
Never one to settle for less, Aaron decided to take a chance and email Maeve. He was also drunk and nowhere near thinking straight.
Hey Goofball,
Life's been pretty crazy, and I just couldn't fight the urge to talk to you. I know you hate me and I'm blocked on basically everything, but I just want to know how you are.

Two weeks later, while Aaron was working, he received an email on his laptop that immediately grabbed his attention. He opened it to find a simple message: "How have you been."
In that moment, he felt a surge of happiness like never before.
Fast forward a month, and Aaron and Nadia had broken up but remained on good terms. Aaron had been honest with her, admitting that he was still in love with his ex. Nadia, understanding and caring, made him promise to stay friends. Nadia was practically his female counterpart, so keeping her in his life was effortless.
Within that month, Aaron reconnected with Maeve, and as always, they got back together without hesitation.
Maeve hated him—she hated how he always forgave her, how he never got angry, how he remained calm, and how she could never convince him that he was too perfect for her. She hated him so much that she couldn't help but be in love with him. To Aaron, he was the perfect boyfriend who stood by her through every downfall, but to Maeve, he was too oblivious to understand her true feelings.
Maeve was always the sweetest girl—never one to argue, fight, steal, or even swear. Meeting Aaron was a significant adjustment; he was her complete opposite. Always forgiving, listening, and working through every minor issue but never thinking of communicating. He was too playful and could no longer hold the romantic conversations they once had. But nothing stays the same when you've been cheated on by someone you trusted completely.
As they entered the fourth year of their relationship, much had changed. Maeve had grown to be annoyed by Aaron's gentlemanly ways, while he had grown tired of being blamed for everything that went wrong. Seeking comfort, both turned to their friends. Aaron, in particular, confided in Nadia— his former ex now turned best friend.

Aaron entered their bedroom in the small apartment that was filled with books, small plants, and the constant shade of brown everywhere that eyes could look. The scent of vanilla filled his nostrils as he turned on the light, which only dimly lit the room.
"Maeve," he said, placing down his work bag, his tone cold and his expression matching. She was spread across the bed, laying on her belly and reading one of her favorite books: The Love Hypothesis. She placed her book on her nightstand face down as she turned to look at him.
"You're back late." She sat up, her legs dangling off the bed.
"Work was heavy today." He walked over to their closet, hanging his work coat on the hook that's on the door. As he turned back around, his eyes met Maeve's, and the tension in the room grew stronger.
"I ran into someone today," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Aaron's eyes narrowed, his breath catching in her throat as he waited for her to continue.
She doesn't know... she can't know.
