Striding through the busy streets of Subarea, Ren could feel the life pulsating vibrantly all about him. It was the calling of vendors, their voices soaring above laughter and the murmur of conversation. He wove a path through the crowd, his senses on high alert, focusing tight. What I need now is mora.
Coming around a corner, before him lay the Adventurers' Guild, the lights of it glowed invitingly against the evening sky.
"Ad astra abyssosque! Welcome to the Adventurers' Guild!" A merry woman stood behind the counter, her bright smile was in contrast to the solemn world Ren just came out from.
"Hello. Am I allowed to join the Adventurers' Guild?" he asked, making sure his voice was even.
"Yes, certainly! I'll need your details, at least your name," she said, pen poised over a ledger.
"Dav—" The name slipped away like smoke before he could articulate it. "Ren. My name is Ren."
No surname?" she asked, an eyebrow rising.
"No, I don't recall my surname."
"No surname? Interesting man, aren't you? If you'd like, you could have mine~" The latter part was dripping with a strange, sultry intonation that made Ren's eyes widen in surprise.
No, I'm fine." He scanned the guild hall, his eyes landing on the Bounty Board that was packed full of notices. Each parchment seemed to pulse with some promise of danger and reward.
"You guys do bounties?" he asked, hoping to change the subject from her suggestion.
"Yeah, but we're thinking of removing it since nobody does them. Millelith does the same work and pays higher and has better job prospects," she said, an irked undertone to her voice. "So people tend to join them instead."
Ren nodded, understanding well the appeal of promised stability. Still, hunting criminals for a good sum of mora was too enticing to let go of.
She handed him a card, the embossed guild insignia gleaming under the light. "Well, welcome to the Guild! My name is Katheryn. We'll be seeing each other often, I suppose."
"How much are the bounties worth?" he asked, a flutter of hope rising in his chest.
"They should range from 3,000 to 10,000 mora, depending on the target," she said, businesslike tones returning to her voice.
"Alright." He went to the board and scanned the numerous bounties. He came across one that paid a lucrative 10,000 mora.
"What do I show for proof?" Ren asked as he talked about it, already thinking of what he would do with the money.
"You can show me the head, then dispose of it. You can find Hu Tao for burying them, although she does require a fee."
"Who's Hu Tao?" he asked, knowing damn well who she was.
She's the 77th Director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. If I recall correctly, she was the one who put up the bounty board in the first place," Katheryn explained, a slight lightness entering her tone as she mentioned Hu Tao.
