The afternoon sun filtered through the leaves of the plum tree, casting dappled shadows over the courtyard of the Butterfly Mansion. Tanjiro Kamado leaned against the cool stone wall, his gaze fixed on the figure seated across from him—Kanao. She was busy tending to a small flower bed, her hands delicately brushing the petals of the newly bloomed flowers. The gentle breeze played with her hair, sending loose strands fluttering across her face.
Tanjiro's POV:
I can't help but smile as I watch her, completely absorbed in what she's doing. She has this way of bringing calm wherever she goes. I think that's one of the things that drew me to her—how serene she always seems, even when the world around us is so chaotic.
She looks so peaceful now, and part of me doesn't want to disturb her, but there's a warmth building in my chest that I just can't ignore.
"Kanao," I say softly, stepping closer. She looks up at me, her lavender eyes meeting mine with that quiet intensity I've come to know so well. "Do you want to take a break? The sun's beautiful today. Maybe we can sit under the plum tree for a bit?"
Her expression doesn't change much, but I see the faintest flicker of a smile on her lips. She nods once, carefully wiping her hands on her apron before standing up. As she walks over to me, I can't help but feel a warmth spread through my chest. These simple moments with her—they're my favorite.
We settle beneath the shade of the plum tree, the soft petals from the flowers drifting down around us like snow. I reach out and gently take her hand in mine, feeling the warmth of her skin against my palm. It's a small gesture, but it's enough to remind me of how much she means to me.
Kanao's POV:
When Tanjiro holds my hand, I feel a strange mixture of calm and excitement, like the world slows down for just a moment. His presence has always had that effect on me—steady, warm, like a comforting fire on a cold night. I glance at him from the corner of my eye, watching as he gazes up at the sky. The soft light of the afternoon sun bathes his face, highlighting the gentleness in his expression.
He always looks so kind, so full of life. It's no wonder that, after everything we've been through, I've grown to feel this way about him.
I turn my gaze toward the horizon, where the sky is a soft blue. Even though I'm not used to talking about my feelings, there's something about being with Tanjiro that makes it easier. Maybe it's because I know he'll understand, even if I don't say much.
"Tanjiro," I say quietly, feeling his attention shift to me immediately. He always listens so intently, like every word matters. "I... like moments like this. When it's quiet, and we don't have to worry about anything else."
His smile widens, and he squeezes my hand gently. "Me too, Kanao. I feel like, with you, I can just... breathe. Like the weight of the world isn't as heavy when we're together."
Tanjiro's POV:
I can see the way her eyes soften as she listens to me. It's something I've come to cherish—how she listens without needing to say much in return. I know how difficult it's been for her to open up, but the little moments like these, when she shares her thoughts... it means the world to me.
I shift a little closer, leaning against the tree trunk beside her. "You've always been so strong, Kanao. I admire that about you. But I want you to know that you don't have to carry everything alone. I'm here with you."
She looks down at our hands, her fingers tightening slightly around mine. For a moment, I worry that I've said too much, that maybe I've overstepped. But then, she looks up at me, and there's something in her eyes that makes my heart skip a beat.
