Eliana's footsteps echoed in the quiet streets as she walked away from the café, her mind clouded with doubt and confusion. Theo's words lingered, his cryptic message repeating in her head. How much did she really know about Lucas? Could there be a side to him that he had kept hidden, a past that he was still running from?
The rain began to fall, light at first but soon turning into a steady downpour. Eliana pulled her jacket tighter around her, her thoughts in a whirlwind. She had been so sure about Lucas, so willing to look past the complications of his relationship with Sarah, but now... now everything felt uncertain.
As she approached her apartment building, she was startled by the sight of a familiar figure standing outside, leaning against the door. Her heart skipped a beat.
It was Lucas.
"Eliana," he called softly, stepping forward as she neared. His eyes were filled with concern, his hair damp from the rain. "I've been waiting for you."
"What are you doing here?" Eliana asked, her voice sharper than she intended. The confusion, the fear-it was all bubbling to the surface.
"I wanted to talk," Lucas said, his voice soft but insistent. "I could tell something was off when we spoke last night. And now, I feel like you're pulling away."
Eliana stopped just short of him, her mind racing. She couldn't keep pretending nothing was wrong, not after everything that had been said at the café. She had to know.
"I ran into Sarah today," she said, crossing her arms as if to shield herself from the storm, both literal and metaphorical. "And she wasn't alone."
Lucas's face tightened, his jaw clenching. "What did she say?"
"She was with someone. A guy named Theo." Eliana searched his face for any sign of recognition, any hint that he'd react to the name. "He told me that you and he were business partners once. That things didn't end well."
For a moment, Lucas didn't say anything. His eyes darkened, and he looked away, as if weighing his next words carefully. When he finally spoke, his voice was low, almost pained.
"Yeah," he admitted. "Theo and I were involved in some projects together years ago. But it was nothing serious. He's-" Lucas hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. "Theo's always had a knack for blowing things out of proportion."
Eliana narrowed her eyes. "Blowing things out of proportion? He said you've been hiding something from me, Lucas. That you've been running from your past."
Lucas took a step closer, his hand reaching out to touch her arm. "Eliana, it's not what you think. Theo's bitter because things didn't go the way he wanted them to. We had a falling out, and he's been holding onto that grudge ever since. He's trying to turn you against me because he can't stand that I've moved on."
Eliana shook her head, pulling away from his touch. "It's not just Theo, Lucas. Sarah said the same thing. That you're hiding something. That there's a part of you I don't know."
Lucas's eyes flickered with something-regret, maybe even fear-but it was gone just as quickly as it had appeared. "Eliana, you have to believe me. Whatever they're saying, it's not the full story. I care about you. I wouldn't lie to you."
Eliana looked into his eyes, searching for the truth. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to trust that what they had was real, that he wasn't hiding something from her. But the doubt gnawed at her, the uncertainty weighing down on her chest like a lead weight.
Before she could respond, the sound of a car engine drew their attention. A sleek black car pulled up to the curb, and from the passenger side stepped a woman Eliana had never seen before. She was tall, elegant, with sharp features and a gaze that seemed to cut right through her.
Lucas stiffened immediately, his entire body tensing as the woman approached.
"Lucas," the woman said, her voice cool and authoritative. "We need to talk."
Eliana's heart sank as she watched the interaction unfold. There was something between Lucas and this woman, something unspoken but undeniable. She could see it in the way he stood, the way his shoulders tightened and his jaw clenched.
"Not now, Mia," Lucas said, his voice low and firm. "I'm in the middle of something."
Mia's gaze flickered to Eliana, her lips curling into a knowing smile. "I can see that. But this can't wait. You know that."
Eliana felt a wave of nausea wash over her. Who was this woman? And why did it feel like she was witnessing something far more significant than a simple interruption?
"Mia, I said not now," Lucas repeated, his tone sharper this time.
But Mia wasn't deterred. She stepped closer, her eyes locking onto Eliana's with a look that sent chills down her spine. "You have no idea what you've gotten yourself into, do you?" she asked, her voice dripping with condescension. "Lucas has a way of pulling people into his world. And once you're in, it's hard to get out."
Eliana's pulse quickened, her mind reeling. "What are you talking about?"
Mia's smile widened, but it didn't reach her eyes. "He'll tell you whatever you want to hear. He always does. But the truth? That's something Lucas doesn't know how to give."
"Mia, that's enough," Lucas snapped, stepping between them, his face hardening.
But it was too late. The seed of doubt had been planted, and Eliana could feel it growing, twisting inside her.
"Who is she, Lucas?" Eliana asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Who is Mia?"
Lucas looked torn, as if he were weighing whether to tell her the truth or keep it hidden for just a little longer. But in the silence that followed, Eliana knew.
Mia wasn't just some random woman from his past.
She was someone who knew Lucas far better than he had ever let on.
"I think you deserve to know the truth," Mia said, her voice softer now, almost sympathetic. "But Lucas isn't the one who's going to tell you. I am."
