The Doubt

As soon as my wife left to prepare the coffee for the doctor and me, my friend, who is also a doctor, entered my room and locked the door. As soon as he came, he understood the situation and gave some injections to my father. Silence persisted in the room for the next 10 minutes, until my wife knocked on the door. My friend opened the door, and my friend received the tray from my wife and asked her to wait outside for a few minutes. Then he closed the door and served me my coffee. While we were sipping our coffee, we heard some murmuring sound. The sound belongs to none other than my father. We both witnessed how he jerked open his eyes. My friend asked him, "Uncle, how are you feeling now? What happened?" My father shook his head, showing he was all right. Pretending to us that he can't move or speak. His poor acting skills angered me more, which caused me to throw the cup on the wall beside him. When I was furiously about to reach him and shackle him to death, my friend got the hold of me and prevented me from doing that by saying, "Your wife is just staying outside. Behave yourself, Arjun." As soon as those words left my friend's mouth, my father shouted, "Sita, help me, help me," calling for help, while struggling so hard to sit upright, forgetting my room is soundproof. My friend said,"Bad move," and released his hold on me. I kneeled on one leg beside him while picking up a piece of broken cup. "Behave yourself; otherwise, I won't think a second before making you take your last breath. Just think twice before doing any dramas. I won't let you separate my wife from me, as you have previously done with my mom. Today, she saved you. Don't make her the reason for your death the other day. I knew you were alright. I just called him so that my wife could sleep peacefully. But not tonight. I don't know why she's caring for you so much. Ashwin, do it," I ordered my friend after warning my father. After he put the injection in, my father's body again became numb. "Arjun, I have told you many times not to forget that medicine. Did you just forget to give that? What would have happened if he had said something to your wife or someone?" My friend shouted at me for being careless. "I have to ask Gaurds and Lakshmi Ma about this. Actually, he is on his regular medications. I don't know how this happened. I think it will be better if you increase your dosage," I said, scratching my forehead with my pointing finger. "Okay, we have to inform your wife. Cool down," He calmed me down by saying this. As soon as we opened the door. My wife said something that shocked both of us. "Sorry, Arjun, I think I am the reason for his condition. Actually, yesterday night a tablet was finished. I thought to remember you... to buy it from the medical store. But I forgot to inform you. He didn't take that medicine for two days. I am worrying whether it is the reason for his condition," she asked us while showing the empty tablet cover. Me and my friend exchanged glasses, and both thought, 'Of course you are the reason behind this situation.'" It's ok, darling; don't forget to give him this medicine," I said, grabbing the tablet cover from her. "Mrs. Arjun, Don't ever forget to do that; it may have some lethal effect on him," my friend said to her. He glanced at me when he said, stressing the word "lethal."As my father ruined my today's mood, me and my friend decided to enjoy tonight by getting drunk at his house. I informed my wife that I have some important work to do and left from home. I was very disappointed when I left my newlywed wife alone at my home. That too with my Witty father. My darling felt very guilty for my father's situation. She is just like a baby. Doesn't want to harm anyone. This is one of her qualities that made me want to possess her.

Sita's pov

Arjun left with his friend after locking the house. When I was about to drown until sleep, my friend called me and dropped a bomb on my head. "Sita, I think there are a lot of mistakes in your father-in-law's medication. Just see the picture that I have sent you. The tablet in the picture paralyzes a man's body; it prevents him from moving. I don't know why your husband's friend would prescribe this medicine to him. I think there is something fishy going on in your house." The truth shook an unknown fear inside me. My mind rewinds up the situations of the day before yesterday.

Flash back: Day before yesterday

"Oh oh! Uncle! We want a new set of this medicine. It is already finished. I think I should inform your son," I said, looking at him. "I don't know much about medicine. I think I should ask Lakshmi Ma," I said, looking at his face. Then suddenly he shook his head, signaling to me that it's alright. "Oh! It is not a very important medicine, uncle?" I asked him, to which he shook his head positively. "Okay. Then I'll inform him in the morning. You have to take it on nights only. Then he will get it by tomorrow night," I said and left from there.

Flashback ends

"Tara, my father-in-law knew about that medicine already. That's why he didn't want me to tell that to my husband. Do you know how he acted today while checking my father-in-law? I think I have to inform my husband of this." While I was saying all this, she interrupted me and said, " Just stop it. Stop your stupid act. How are you very sure that your husband is not involved in these crimes? You have been saying that he is behaving like he is not very fond of his father, right? You have always felt that there is a gap or wall between the father and son duo, right? Then how can you be very sure that it is not your husband who didn't give that medicine to your father-in-law? Isn't he the one who is with the doctor while the check-up is going on?" She bombarded me with her back-to-back questions, for which I don't have answers. "Let's don't jump to the conclusion by presuming. Is there any medication to reduce his numbness?" I asked immediately.

"Where is your husband?"

"He went out with his friend for a meeting. He will come home by tomorrow."

"Ok, this is a perfect time. Don't give him tonight's medicine."

"But, just before an hour, He gave the medication to my father-in-law."

"Calm down; don't panic, ok? He cannot move his body completely and speak continuously, but he can do some little movements. Notice those actions and ask him the truth behind his situation. Then you will get to know who is the culprit. And be quick. I will inform the cops as soon as you give me the confirmation of the culprit." As soon as she said the words cops and culprit, the line got cut. This increased the panic mode inside me.
