November 22, 2022Sunjai sat back in the chair preparing to speak about her career. She's retired from the spotlight for some time now. It was her husband's idea for her to make a documentary about her accomplishments. At first, she was apprehensive about doing it but being in front of the camera felt like home.
"I can't believe I'm doing this," Sunjai said. "You know putting this documentary together was the scariest thing I've ever done in my career. I'm happy that I get to share my journey with you all." She smiled. "Life can pull you in all sorts of directions. I'd never thought I'd be sitting here right now."
"What was the biggest moment in your career?" One of the producers asked off camera.
"Biggest moment?" She paused to think about her response. "That's a really good question. There are so many, to be honest. If I had to pick it would be Thriller. Michael allowed me to write for the album and he didn't have to. At the time I was very green in the industry. Being a new songwriter had its challenges. Established artists may not want to take the chance on you. They'll pick someone with more experience and who can make them a hit. Michael and Quincy believed in my talents when I was unsure myself."
"After, Thriller came out my career skyrocketed. When I tell you the phone was ringing off the hook nonstop. Everyone wanted me to write for them it was insane. I'll forever be grateful for Michael taking that chance on me. He's always been supportive of me. I never thought I'd be married to my best friend-" She was going to continue until she heard another voice.
"I always knew" Michael came into frame. He pulled up a chair to sit next to her.
"Michael it's not your turn yet." The man always did what he wanted. "As you can see he doesn't listen." She laughed.
He reached over to hold her hand. "I had to step in Sunshine. I always knew you were the one for me."
"Really?" She raised her eyebrow. "That's not how I remember it. You dated other women before me."
"What matters is that I married you. I'm in love with you even more now than back then." He was the sweetest man.
"Aww baby" She leaned her head against his shoulders. "I love you too."
"I know you weren't sure about doing this. I'm glad you decided to do it. I've seen you go through so much. She is the strongest woman I know. The world will be able to see it too." He was proud of her. She's come a long way and deserves to be celebrated. "I wouldn't have accomplished all that I have without you. You're listed on Rolling Stone's Greatest Songwriters of All Time for a reason."
"I remember people texting me saying congratulations. I was like ummm....why?" She and Michael burst into laughter. "I hadn't seen it yet so I was confused. Marlon called and told me."
"Of course Marlon did." He smiled. "I'm glad you two are close."
"Marlon calls me every day and I mean every day. He's always checking on me to see how I'm doing. He's always been a person you can talk to about anything. Tito is the same way too."
"I think they talk to you more than me."
"I love it though." She loved all of her siblings-in-law. "We're getting off-topic though."
"Seriously, I'm excited for the fans to see this side of you. I think they're going to learn a lot about you." He turned his head to her. "I think you sure give a little teaser. Give them something to look forward to."
"Well....okay without giving too much away I have to start from the beginning. That's when I first moved into Hayvenhurst."
"We had some great times there." He laughed thinking about the memories. "So much happened at the house, especially between you and me."
"Yeah, we did. It felt like I became a part of the family too."
"You are family Sunshine." He lifted her hand kissing the back of it. "Even before we got married."
"You're so sweet to me. I know you're wondering how I ended up living with the Jacksons. You'll have to watch the documentary to find out."
