I felt  her squirm trying to explain our compromised position away to our family. She was so cute. Looking all red like a beetroot.  It was really laughable.

Why does she care so much about what people think of her anyway.  To me, people would think whatever they want to think, so it’s better I live my life and let them judge all they want.
As far as I am happy. Period. Taking my hands from her shoulders, I decided to have mercy on her and save the day. Left for me, I would go straight to the point and introduce myself as her boyfriend. I shut my eyes at the image my thoughts had projected in my head.

I opened my eyes, shook off the image, and approached our engaged audience.

“HI,  you must be the celebrant and Solu’s sister. I am Chude, a friend and your friend’s brother”

I finished pointing at my sister, who was watching me suspiciously,  arms akimbo.

“Yea, welcome to my home”

The lady shook my outstretched hand.

“I have heard so much about you from your sister. It's wonderful what you did for her recently.  For all your family members infact. May God bless and replenish for you. It’s an honor to finally meet you”

Now, I was the one who was fighting a blush.

“You are the one supposed to be receiving compliments today, not me. Besides, I did what every other appreciative kid brother would do”

“The word being appreciative.  This Genz generation is anything but appreciative, so take your accolades,  you deserve it”

“Thank you ma’am,  I appreciate it and this...” I reached into my inner jacket and pulled out a little present I had brought for her.

“Is for you, happy birthday”

“wow, thank you”

She opened it to reveal a simple gold bracelet. I had seen a jewelry store as I was driving out of the island and I decided to pick out something for the celebrant.  It’s not nice going to a party empty-handed.

“It’s beautiful”

“You are very welcome”

“Playing nice, I see” My sister nudged me.

“You asked me to” I whispered back to her while the others were admiring the bracelet.

“Yet you say you are not interested “

“Am not” that came out louder than I expected, and everyone’s attention came back to me.

“No offense” I said to the girl in question.

“None taken” she smiled, opening her hands wide.

“But with your taste in jewelery, I just might be”

“Please  don’t  complicate....”

“Just kidding. So how do you know my Auntie Solu?”

“Well, we.....”

“He used to be friends with my late husband”

“I was never friends with your ass of a husband”  I replied vehemently.  Even the gusto with which I replied surprised even me. Even my nostrils flared, and my eyes, sure was fiery.

“Okay, let’s calm down and enjoy the party”

Saying that, my sister pulled me away towards the back door. Remembering that Solu will get a drilling from her sister and niece, I turned to them.
