I sat in my chair, the steam from my tea curling into the morning air as I glanced at the woman lying on my bed. The room was still, save for the soft sound of her breathing, which had grown shallow.
Her eyes fluttered, her body stirring as she began to wake. I leaned back slightly, taking another sip of my tea, the warmth spreading through me as I waited.
"Morning, Addams," I greeted casually, watching as she slowly sat up, her expression still clouded with sleep and remnants of the previous night.
She blinked at me, her dark eyes scanning the room before they settled on me, confusion knitting her brows.
"Why am I here?" she asked, her voice weak and groggy, as if she was still piecing together the events.
I set my tea down, meeting her gaze. "You were drunk and passed out," I explained simply. "Oh, and Tyler left you." I added that last part with a hint of irritation creeping into my voice.
She groaned, leaning back against the headboard, her hands pressing to her temples as if trying to fend off the pounding headache I knew she must have.
"I drank too much," she muttered, her voice soft.
"I'll say," I replied, raising an eyebrow as I reached for my cup again. "I'm more impressed by the fact that you're not even remotely bothered by Tyler leaving you in that state. Kind of an asshole move, if you ask me."
She let out a sigh, her hand still resting on her forehead.
"I insisted on going," she said flatly, her voice laced with indifference. "It wasn't his decision."
"Right," I said, unconvinced. "And he just let you walk alone like that? In your state? I'm not buying it, Wednesday."
Her eyes flickered toward me, her expression unreadable. "Calm down, Enid. It won't happen again."
I narrowed my eyes at her, frustrated by her nonchalance.
"That's not the point," I said, setting my tea down. "If I hadn't seen you last night, something could've happened. You were practically out on your feet."
"But you did see me," she shot back quickly, her gaze locking onto mine with that piercing intensity. Then her expression softened just slightly and she added, in a tone that surprised me, "And I can't believe I'm saying this, but... thank you."
I blinked at her, taken aback by the rare show of gratitude. A smile tugged at my lips.
"Of course," I replied, feeling the tightness in my chest loosen a little. I pointed to the small cup of tea and the packet of headache medicine I had left on the desk beside her. "You should drink that, by the way. It'll help with your hangover."
She glanced at the tea and meds, giving me a small nod of acknowledgment.
"Thanks," she muttered again, more quietly this time, as she reached for the cup and the medicine, downing the pills into her mouth.
"You can rest here if you want," I offered, my voice a little too hopeful.
I wouldn't mind having her around a bit longer after everything that had happened. The apartment felt oddly full with her in it.
Wednesday shook her head as she set the empty cup back on the desk.
"I'm not staying here long," she said. She was already sitting up, clearly ready to leave as soon as possible.
"Bummer," I replied, trying to sound casual, hiding the disappointment in my voice.
I watched her carefully as she moved, trying to gauge if she was still feeling the effects of last night's drinks, but she seemed steadier now.
