It was the middle of Autumn in a cold morning. By now the leaves had changed color, filling the world with a vivacious sight. Among all that the chilly air danced throughout my skin forcing me to wear a thick leather jacket.
I yawned rushing upstairs quickly grabbing my things, scavenging for anything I could need in this trip. My friends were outside currently putting my suitcase in the back of the car. We were going to have a blast today! I can't wait till all the fun begins!
It's even more exciting because I still don't know where we're going. I was notified that it was going to be cold. Unfortunately that's the only hint I got. They better not have lied to me. If they did I'm going to go nuts because I based all of my clothing on that small fact. I sigh. Ever since this suprise that they had pulled I couldn't rest in peace.
I shake my head in an attempt to distract my mind.
I wonder what they're planning to wear for Halloween today? Or maybe I'm just thinking too far ahead.
Wait what time is it? I glance at my watch cursing under my breath, I'm late already. I ran quickly down the stairs stumbling on the way, I locked my door shut hoping that I didn't forget anything and hopped onto the car.
"You're late," Nymeria joked, patting the seat next to her. I smile at her as I scoot over, dragging my backpack alongside me. Something inside me was just all over the place, I had a giddy feeling inside. The anticipation of just arriving to our destination was driving me crazy. "Sooo," I start saying. "Where are we going exactly? I've waited all week for the surprise!!" I impatiently declare. Raven smiles at me from the rearview mirror quickly raising his eyebrows. A thing he always did to say hello when he was driving. I smiled back, it's not like I had a choice. I couldn't control it. He had the brightest yet most perfect eyes. Suddenly I was lost in them enchanted into a green thick tropical forest as I ran onto vines getting lost inside of them. I could stay there forever. His black hair was a bit messy but his jawline was as sharp as ever. Then I was drawn to his smile, one that he never failed to show me.
I stare lost in thought before being brutally attacked by Nymeria who nudges my side hard enough to knock me out. She wiggles her eyebrows at me in the attempt to look convincing. It was clear what she was trying to tell me. I pushed her away ignoring her pleas, there was no way I'd ever confess to him even if I wanted too.
I've had a crush on Raven ever since I was in the 6th grade. Just out of luck we ended up getting the same college and some of the same classes. We talked all the time but deep inside I had a feeling he liked someone else. He always seemed happier alongside my friend Morana. I couldn't blame him, she was a beautiful girl. She had the perfect tan, the most gorgeous dark silky hair, whenever a man saw her they'd always ask for her number. It's a shame Morana didn't know that Raven liked her, but I didn't have the guts to tell her, thinking about them being together made my heart clench, quickly twisting into a knob.
I couldn't live if that happened. "Darcelle! Hello!" Nymeria waved, quickly snapping my attention. "Scoot closer and set your mini back pack between your legs, we still have to pick up Morana and Clyde." I apologize quietly, quickly following her instructions.
"But where are we going?"
They both stare at me debating weather to tell me or not. "You'll know soon enough," they said in unison. I rolled my eyes at them. Though I love their efforts to suprise me I'd still very much be happy if I was told where I'd be headed to. At least it'd help keep me at ease. How can I make plans for things that could possibly happen if I don't know my setting? What if a volcano I didn't know about was nearby? How will we escape if a fire started? How will we get help if their was a car crash or if someone broke into our place? How will I call the cops? Is there going to be Wi-Fi?
The thoughts shriveled into my mind failing to be left behind. Until finally we pulled up to a house. "We're lucky they're neighbors," Nymeria whispers to me. I nod. This'll be quick, it has to. It hasn't even been 5 minutes and I already wanted to arrive at our destination already.
Once Morana and Clyde entered we greeted them and talked about our plans and how we wanted to eat food throughout the whole ride.
It was times like this that I wish could last forever. We laughed for an hour straight before we decided to stop the talking and just listen to music.
Eventually civilization seemed to cease. Signs were nailed onto trees saying to keep out. I suppose theirs bears around this area. "Are we here yet?"
They all stare at me, shaking their heads. Oh my freaking gosh. I seriously can't take this anymore! I need to know where we're going asap. "Just tell me already pleaseee I can't take this any longer. I need to know!!"
Once again they shook their heads. I slumped back to my seat. A surge of regret overcame me, I shouldn't even have said anything, now they're gonna think I'm annoying. I just want to get this over with already.
I stare up ahead of the road inspecting the road. A huge bear comes into view strolling in the middle of the road almost as if it was waiting for us.
Raven whirls the steering wheel, we all slid to the right in a hurled movement. I grab onto the head rest to keep my balance as Nymeria pressed onto me. Morana slides to the door hitting her head in the process. "What the heck!!? Raven!?" Morana yells, clearly mad at Raven for not paying attention to the road up ahead.
The bear growls standing up, he snarls his teeth threatening us before attacking our car. It clings onto the windows clawing at it to break it. To shatter it, to send its contents out. That bear was hungry and we just happened to be here at the right moment. In a big forest, we were the only signs of life around.
My heart beats fast once again. If I knew I'd come across a bear one day I would've prepared for it.
I hopped onto the passenger seat where no one sat at. "Switch seats with me," I pleaded to Raven, my voice stern. Once I make up my mind, no one's changing it...or at least that how I want to think. I don't have any confidence, but when your lives at stake it's worth the risk.
He looked up at me in the eyes. At that moment my heart skipped a beat. Once again I was back into the tropical green forest swinging on the vines along the peaceful breeze. I peered down to his lips. No. I need to stop. I jerk my head around before asking him to switch seats with me once again.
He looks at me in the eyes once more leaning in to my ear. My breath hitches, as I carefully choose what to say next, but before I have the chance to do so he whispers "Lead the way Dracula, all talk no bite," he joked scrunching his face. I scrunched mine back knowing that he called me Dracula since that's what a group of kids used to call me in college. Some people gave up on calling me Darcelle pronounced Darcel. They couldn't remember the pronunciation and I kept correcting them until they just gave up and started calling me nicknames. I then switched places with Raven focusing on the bear which was now banging on the cars window. "You better not kill us," he warns half jokingly.
I look up at him nodding. I couldn't possibly do that, especially since he was in the car.
At that moment the adrenaline came rushing in. It ran through my veins telling me to step of the gas pedal. I shake my head. "Here goes nothing," I whisper to myself.
The car screeches as I make a sharp u turn causing the bear to stumble and fall to his side on the car. I veered again in the hopes to make the bear fall off. On my attempt, the bear rolls down from its side along with a loud bang. I step onto the gas pedal yelling "hold your seatbelts tight," before taking yet another sharp u turn into the direction we were headed.
Nymeria sighs of relief. "I though we were going to die."
Morana just glares at me. I knew inside that she was mad at me for possibly ruining her hair. I know Morana can be nice but she's been apart of our group for two weeks now. I always had a bad feeling about her. Up until now, my gut was right.
Me and her, have never gotten along. It all started when we met at a party once. Well she was introduced to me by Nymeria.
Sure she was pretty, but her personality turned out to be pretty shitty.
I scoff. "Where to?"
Raven gives in and finally tells me the direction. "We're going to a small cottage up to the forest. There is a small town over there." He points to a concealed road up ahead. He stops himself from talking more since he didn't want to give me anymore information. I didnt care. I had already gotten the info I wanted.
Through the rest of the ride. No one spoke a word and not a sound was heard from either us or the forest. It was quiet. Oddly quiet.
