Emily had always been the girl in the back of the room, the one who silently observed, blending into the shadows. She wasn't one to stand out. At 89kg and standing at 5'1", she often felt invisible in a world obsessed with appearances. The thick-rimmed glasses that framed her face and her constant battle with asthma only made her feel smaller in a world that seemed too big for someone like her. University life was supposed to be her chance to reinvent herself, but the weight of her insecurities held her back. The dance club was her dream, but every time she approached the sign-up sheet, her hands trembled and her legs wobbled.
Then there was the public speaking class she had to attend as part of her curriculum. Emily loved the idea of standing before a crowd, sharing her thoughts and ideas, but the moment she imagined the eyes of dozens of classmates on her, her throat would tighten, and she'd lose her voice. She would watch as others confidently took the stage, wishing she had the courage to do the same.
Everything in Emily's life was routine and predictable, until the day she met Damian Grey. He was the epitome of cold professionalism, the CEO of one of the city's largest corporations. Their paths crossed during a university event where he was invited as a guest speaker to talk about leadership and business strategy. Damian's tall, lean figure exuded power, and his sharp jawline and piercing eyes made him the kind of man people admired from a distance but never approached. He spoke with authority, his deep voice commanding the attention of everyone in the room. Emily, sitting in the back as usual, couldn't take her eyes off him.
After the talk, Emily stayed behind, hiding near the refreshments, watching as people crowded around Damian, vying for his attention. She felt out of place, knowing she'd never have the confidence to speak to someone like him. But fate had a different plan.
Damian noticed her standing alone, the only one who hadn't approached him. There was something about her that intrigued him, the way she seemed to melt into the background yet had a quiet intensity in her eyes. He walked over, his expression unreadable.
"You didn't ask any questions," he said, his voice smooth and controlled.
Emily's heart raced. She wasn't expecting to be noticed, let alone approached. "I... I didn't think I had anything important to ask," she stammered, her face flushing red.
Damian raised an eyebrow. "There's no such thing as an unimportant question. If you're here, you must have something to say."
Her breath hitched, and she took a shaky step back. "I'm not very good at speaking in front of others..."
Damian's eyes softened, just for a moment, as if he understood more than he let on. "If you want to get ahead in this world, you'll have to face that fear someday."
Emily nodded, feeling small under his intense gaze. She wanted to explain that it wasn't just fear but a lifetime of insecurity, but the words wouldn't come out. Instead, she just nodded again, awkwardly shifting her weight from foot to foot.
Over the next few weeks, Damian found himself thinking about the shy girl with the bright eyes who barely spoke. He had never been one to entertain emotions or distractions, his life devoted entirely to his company. But something about Emily stirred something deep within him, a quiet longing he hadn't felt in years.
One evening, after a particularly grueling day at the office, Damian found himself driving to the university's campus. He had no reason to be there, and yet, he couldn't resist the urge to see her again. As he walked through the empty halls, he heard music-soft, slow, and rhythmic.
Following the sound, Damian found himself at the door of a large, empty dance studio. There, in the center of the room, was Emily. Her eyes were closed, her movements fluid and graceful, her body swaying to the music in a way that captivated him. She looked free, unburdened by the weight of her insecurities.
He stood there, watching her in awe. This was a side of Emily he hadn't seen before-a side she kept hidden from the world. When the music stopped, Emily opened her eyes, startled to find Damian standing at the door. Her face turned crimson, and she immediately tried to explain.
"I... I just like to dance when no one's watching," she mumbled, avoiding his gaze.
Damian stepped into the room, his cold demeanor melting away as he approached her. "Why haven't you joined the dance club?"
Emily looked down at the floor. "I'm not... like the others. I don't fit in."
He reached out, gently lifting her chin so their eyes met. "Who told you that?"
Emily swallowed, unsure how to respond. "I just... know."
Damian's eyes softened again, and for the first time, his voice was tender. "The only thing stopping you is you. Don't let your insecurities define what you're capable of."
Her heart fluttered at his words, the sincerity in his voice catching her off guard. No one had ever spoken to her like that before, with both encouragement and belief. Without thinking, she blurted out, "I'm scared."
"So am I," Damian admitted quietly, surprising even himself.
Emily blinked, confused. "You? But you're..."
"Cold, distant, untouchable?" he finished for her, a slight smirk tugging at his lips. "I've built walls, Emily. But watching you tonight, dancing so freely when you thought no one was watching, reminded me of something I've forgotten... the power of vulnerability."
She didn't know what to say. The man who seemed so distant, so unreachable, was opening up to her in a way she never expected. Damian took a step closer, his presence commanding yet comforting. "If you can dance when no one's watching, why not when everyone is?"
Emily smiled, her insecurities still present but fading just a little under his intense gaze. Maybe, just maybe, she wasn't as invisible as she thought.
In the weeks that followed, Emily found herself joining the dance club, stepping onto stages she never thought she could, all the while knowing that somewhere in the audience, Damian was watching, believing in her as no one else ever had.
