Lydia Matthews wasn’t just the best student lawyer at Harrington Law School—she lived for competition. Whether it was a debate, a mock trial, or simply answering a lecturer’s tricky question, she thrived on proving herself. Clumsy in the real world? Sure. But in the courtroom? Unstoppable.

Today was no different. She stood at the podium in the lecture hall, her voice sharp and precise, as she dismantled her opponent's argument with ease. The room was buzzing with murmurs of admiration. Lydia smirked to herself. This was her domain, and she ruled it.

Then, out of nowhere, Professor Harrington, who had been sitting at the back observing the class, cleared his throat.

“I’d like to introduce someone special to you all today,” he said, and Lydia turned to see him gesture toward a man sitting in the back row. “Ethan Blake, an alumnus of Harrington Law and one of the sharpest lawyers I’ve had the pleasure to teach. He’ll be mentoring some of you as part of the advanced trial program.”

Lydia raised an eyebrow as the man stood up. Ethan Blake looked nothing like she expected. His suit wasn’t pressed to perfection like most lawyers’, his tie slightly askew. He seemed too relaxed, too nonchalant. Yet, the way he moved—the quiet confidence—made everyone in the room pay attention.

“Nice to meet you all,” Ethan said casually. His voice was smooth, a little too casual for Lydia’s taste.

As the class ended, Lydia didn’t waste a second. She approached Ethan, her competitive spirit buzzing like electricity. “So, you're Harrington’s golden boy, huh?”

Ethan looked at her, his lips quirking into a smirk. “I wouldn’t say that. But I did alright.”

“Alright?” Lydia repeated, crossing her arms. “How about you show me just how ‘alright’ you are? Debate me.”

Ethan raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “You’re serious?”

“Absolutely.”

He chuckled, his amusement clear. “Okay, sure. But don’t expect me to go easy on you.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it.”

Episode 2: The First Challenge

The tension in the mock courtroom was palpable. Lydia stood at the podium, her fingers gripping the edges as she launched into her argument. Ethan sat across from her, looking entirely too calm for someone about to get destroyed.

She delivered her points with precision, weaving her argument seamlessly. Her eyes darted to Ethan, waiting for him to falter, but he didn’t. Instead, when he took the stand, he spoke slowly, almost lazily, and yet every word hit its mark.

Lydia’s confidence wavered. How was he doing this? It was as though he barely tried, and yet, he picked apart her case with ease. When it was over, Professor Harrington called it a tie, but Lydia knew she had met her match. Ethan wasn’t just good—he was really good.

After the debate, she caught up with him outside. “I’ll admit, you’re better than I thought,” she said, breathless from the adrenaline.

Ethan shrugged, giving her that infuriating smile. “You’re not bad yourself, Matthews. But you still have a lot to learn.”

She bristled at that. “I’m the best in this institution.”

“And I’m the best in the courtroom,” Ethan replied, his tone playful but with an edge that made her pulse quicken. “You’ll get there.”

Lydia’s competitive side flared. “We’ll see about that.”

Episode 3: Fire & Ice

Weeks passed, and Lydia found herself increasingly drawn to Ethan. Not in the romantic sense—at least, that’s what she told herself—but because he was the only one who could truly challenge her. They debated constantly, sometimes in class, sometimes after hours in the library, always pushing each other.

But it was more than that. The way he was so relaxed, so confident, while she was always on edge, striving for perfection—it fascinated her. Lydia hated how he seemed to get under her skin so easily. She’d catch herself thinking about their last debate, replaying his words in her head late at night.

One evening, after a particularly intense argument about criminal law, Lydia found herself walking alongside Ethan through the campus courtyard. It was late, the streetlights casting a soft glow over the cobblestone path. Lydia was still fuming.

“You twisted the law to fit your argument,” she snapped. “That’s not how it’s supposed to be done!”

Ethan chuckled, hands in his pockets as they walked. “Lydia, it’s not always about what’s right. It’s about what works in court.”

“That’s—” Lydia stopped herself. She wanted to argue, but she couldn’t deny the truth in his words. “It’s frustrating.”

“You’re frustrated because you’re used to winning. You’re good, Lydia. But winning isn’t everything.”

Lydia stopped walking, turning to face him. “And you’re infuriating.”

Ethan stepped closer, his eyes locking onto hers. For a moment, the air between them felt charged, like an electric current passing between them. “I know,” he said, his voice low. “But that’s why you like me.”

Her breath hitched, and she felt herself blush. She opened her mouth to retort, but no words came out. Instead, Ethan gave her a knowing smile and turned to walk away.

“See you tomorrow, Matthews,” he called over his shoulder.

Lydia stood there, heart racing, watching him disappear into the night. She didn’t want to admit it, but Ethan was right. She liked the challenge. She liked him.

Episode 4: Rivalry or Something More?

Lydia found herself thinking about Ethan more than she’d like. Every time they debated, every time he flashed that infuriating grin, it was like a spark ignited inside her.

One afternoon, she caught up with her best friend, Ava, in the student lounge.

“I don’t know what it is about him,” Lydia said, exasperated. “He drives me crazy.”

Ava smirked. “It sounds like you like him.”

“I don’t like him,” Lydia insisted. “He’s just… he’s good at debating. That’s it.”

“Uh-huh,” Ava said, clearly unconvinced. “And you’re not spending all this extra time debating him because you want to impress him?”

Lydia frowned. “No, it’s just—”

“Just what?”

Lydia hesitated, then sighed. “Okay, maybe I like the challenge. But it’s not like that.”

“Sure, Lydia. Keep telling yourself that.”

But as Lydia sat there, staring at the door Ethan had just walked through, she couldn’t help but wonder if Ava was right.
