The next day dawned bright and warm. Nina had spent a restless night, her mind still swirling with thoughts of Ethan and everything he had shared with her. She had finally settled on the idea of facing the day, hoping that some fresh air and sunshine might ease the tension in her heart.
After a quick breakfast with Mich, they heard the sound of a car pulling up outside. Nina's pulse quickened as she glanced out the window and saw Ethan getting out of his car, a smile breaking across his face as he waved. Dressed casually in a light blue button-up shirt and khaki shorts, he looked relaxed, but there was an undercurrent of nervous energy in his movements.
Mich just smiled at her goddaughter, and quietly shooed her away. Nina took a deep breath, straightened her shoulders, and stepped outside to meet Ethan. As she approached, he opened the passenger door for her, an old-fashioned gesture that made her heart flutter.
"I'm kidnapping you today," he said, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Really?" Nina replied, raising an eyebrow. "You're not going to take me skydiving or anything, are you?"
Ethan chuckled, shaking his head. "No skydiving. I promise it'll be a much calmer day. Just some sightseeing and good food."
As they drove through the streets of Key West, Nina couldn't help but admire the charming houses adorned with pastel colors and lush tropical gardens. The ocean shimmered in the distance, inviting and bright.
Their first stop was the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. Ethan shared interesting tidbits about the author as they walked through the lush gardens, pointing out the six-toed cats that roamed the grounds. Nina listened intently, captivated by the stories of Hemingway's life and the history surrounding the house. The atmosphere was lively, filled with the sounds of birds and the rustle of palm trees.
After exploring the museum, they made their way to Duval Street, known for its vibrant shops and bustling atmosphere. They popped into a few quirky boutiques, Nina picking up a colorful sarong while Ethan browsed for some local art. Laughter spilled from their lips as they exchanged playful banter, the earlier heaviness between them gradually lifting.
Next, they stopped at Blue Heaven, a renowned local restaurant famous for its outdoor dining and delicious brunch options. The smell of freshly made Key lime pie wafted through the air as they settled at a rustic wooden table surrounded by blooming flowers. They shared a plate of fluffy pancakes topped with fresh fruit and coconut, and Ethan insisted on ordering the signature dish-banana bread French toast.
"This is incredible!" Nina exclaimed after taking a bite, her eyes widening in delight.
"Right? I told you it was a must-try," Ethan said, grinning with pride. "You can't visit Key West without having some local favorites."
After brunch, they continued their exploration, heading toward Mallory Square. As they wandered along the waterfront, they came across street performers and local artists showcasing their talents. Nina felt a sense of joy bubbling inside her as she watched a fire juggler captivate an audience.
Ethan suggested they take a break and enjoy a drink at a nearby bar, so they settled at Schooner Wharf Bar. The laid-back atmosphere and live music made for the perfect spot to relax. They ordered tropical cocktails-Nina opting for a piña colada, while Ethan went for a classic mojito.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, Ethan turned to Nina with a mischievous glint in his eye. "I have a surprise for you."
"What do you have in mind?" she asked, intrigued.
"You'll see." He led her to a nearby dock where a small boat bobbed gently on the water. The vessel, a cozy little motorboat, was adorned with vibrant cushions and a cooler tucked away at the back.
