             -Jake Romano-

Jake walked away from the locker, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts. He had been watching Lily from afar for what felt like ages, and that moment when he saw Evan talking to her had set off alarm bells in his head.

A rush of protective instinct had surged through him, mixed with an unexpected dose of jealousy.

Why did Evan have to talk to her? Jake thought, frustration gnawing at him.

The way Evan leaned casually against the locker, flashing that cocky grin, made Jake's stomach twist. He had always known Evan was trouble—known for his wild reputation and the way he thrived on stirring drama.

The idea of him approaching Lily, of getting too close, filled Jake with an urgency he hadn't expected.

But when he had walked up, he saw Lily standing her ground. There was something about the way she spoke to Evan, a quiet confidence he hadn't noticed before.

Did she really hold her own against him? That thought both amazed and impressed him. As much as he wanted to protect her, he realized she didn't need saving.

As he turned the corner, he felt a mix of pride and confusion. Why hadn't I just talked to her sooner? He had spent so long admiring her from a distance, rehearsing all the lines he wanted to say, yet here she was, navigating a conversation with the most intimidating guy in school with poise and strength.

Jake leaned against the wall, running a hand through his hair. I can't believe I let Evan intimidate me like that. He felt like an idiot.

He had watched her transform into someone so captivating, but he hadn't stepped up when it mattered most. The sight of her talking to someone else—even if it was someone he couldn't stand—had made him realize just how much he wanted to be the one by her side.

His heart raced as he thought back to the way her face lit up when she defended her love for books.

There was a spark in her eyes that he had rarely seen before, and it made him want to push through his hesitation. I need to stop waiting for the perfect moment. If I want to get to know her, I have to just go for it.

With that thought in mind, Jake took a deep breath, straightened his posture, and decided to gather his courage. Okay, next time I see her, I'm going to talk to her.

As the bell rang, signaling the end of the passing period, he moved through the crowded hallway, his heart still pounding with a mix of nerves and determination. He knew he couldn't let the chance slip away again.

If Evan could approach Lily, then so could he. He wouldn't let fear dictate his actions any longer.

His mind wandered back to their conversation by the locker. "You're not just a distraction." The words echoed in his thoughts. He wanted her to know she was more than just someone to admire from afar. She was someone worth fighting for.

As he walked into his next class, a new sense of purpose fueled his steps. With each moment that passed, he felt the weight of uncertainty lift, replaced by the excitement of possibility. This is the beginning, he thought, smiling to himself. No more hesitation. I'm ready to take that leap
