Three years had passed since Adrian had slipped that ring onto my finger, and what had once felt like a fairy tale was now a nightmare I couldn't escape. Life had thrown us curveballs—dreams deferred, ambitions derailed, and the once-invincible bond we shared began to fray at the edges.
I stood in the kitchen, staring out the window at the rain pouring down like a torrent of unfulfilled promises. The air was thick with tension, the kind that suffocates you until you can barely breathe. Adrian was in the living room, pacing back and forth, his phone pressed to his ear, voice raised. I could only catch snippets of the conversation, but it was enough to know he was arguing with someone—most likely about work.
The storm outside mirrored the storm brewing between us. My heart raced with a mix of anger and hurt. This wasn't how it was supposed to be. We had once talked about building a life together, about being each other's support systems. Now, it felt like we were strangers sharing a space rather than partners in love.
Adrian hung up the phone, his frustration palpable. "This is fucking ridiculous," he muttered, running a hand through his hair. I turned to face him, my heart pounding.
"What's ridiculous?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady, even as I felt the familiar spark of anger ignite within me.
He threw his hands up in exasperation. "Everything! Work is a disaster, and I'm getting pulled in a million directions. I can't even think straight!"
"And what about us, Adrian? Do we even exist in your mind anymore?" I shot back, the hurt spilling over into my words. "You're so consumed with work that you don't even see how distant you've become."
"I'm doing this for us!" he snapped, his voice rising. "You think I want to be stressed out all the time? I'm trying to build a future here!"
"A future? Is that all you care about? Because it feels like you're trying to build a fucking empire while I'm just... here!" I said, the bitterness lacing my voice.
He took a step closer, eyes flashing. "What do you want me to do, Hannah? Quit my job and live in a fucking fairy tale? Newsflash: that's not how life works!"
I clenched my fists, feeling the heat of rage swell inside me. "Life doesn't have to be this way! We used to enjoy each other's company. Now, it's all arguments and resentment."
"Maybe if you put as much energy into understanding my job as you do into being angry, we wouldn't be in this mess!" he shot back, his words sharp and cutting.
"Understanding your job? Are you serious? You're the one who's changed! You used to make time for us, and now you can't even remember the last time we went out for dinner!" I yelled, my voice echoing off the walls.
He ran a hand through his hair again, frustration etched on his face. "It's not that simple, and you know it! I'm trying to provide for us. I thought that was what you wanted!"
"What I wanted was a partner, not a fucking paycheck!" I screamed, feeling tears prick at the corners of my eyes. "I'm tired of feeling like I'm competing with your job for your attention!"
Adrian's face twisted in anger. "So now it's my fault that you're not happy? I'm busting my ass to make this work, and you just want to blame me for everything that's wrong!"
I took a deep breath, trying to reign in my emotions. "It's not about blame! It's about the fact that we've lost each other in all this mess. I miss us, Adrian. I miss who we used to be."
"Maybe we should just stop pretending then," he spat, his tone harsh. "If you can't see how hard I'm trying, then maybe I'm done trying!"
The words hit me like a slap, and I felt the world around me tilt. "You don't mean that," I whispered, my heart breaking at the thought of us unraveling completely.
