READER'S POV:
The bass of the music thumped against the walls of the packed house, vibrating through the air as laughter and chatter blended into a chaotic symphony. You weren't exactly sure how you'd been roped into attending the biggest party of the year, but here you were, nursing a red plastic cup filled with a drink you hadn't dared to taste yet. The living room was alive with the energy of your classmates, but your attention drifted to the one person who seemed to effortlessly steal the spotlight without even trying—Dylan O'Brien.
Dylan had always been the charming, effortlessly funny guy everyone gravitated towards. Tonight, in his fitted denim jacket and that signature grin, he was no exception. You'd caught glimpses of him through the crowd all night, but now he was standing right in front of you, a playful gleam in his dark eyes.
"Y/N, you've been summoned," he announced, holding out a hand as if you were royalty.
You blinked. "Summoned?"
"Truth or dare," he clarified, jerking his thumb over his shoulder toward a circle forming in the center of the room. "You're not allowed to say no. Party rules."
You hesitated, but the infectious energy in his voice was hard to resist. Before you could overthink it, you set down your drink and let him lead you into the circle. The air buzzed with anticipation as more people joined, the tension building with each turn.
Dylan slid onto the carpet beside you, his knee brushing yours. "Don't look so nervous," he teased. "What's the worst that could happen?"
"Famous last words," you muttered, earning a chuckle from him.
The game started innocently enough: truths about embarrassing crushes, dares to chug questionable concoctions. But when it was Dylan's turn to ask, his focus zeroed in on you.
"Y/N," he said, his voice taking on a mock-serious tone that made everyone lean in. "Truth or dare?"
You swallowed, feeling the weight of everyone's eyes on you. "Dare," you said, surprising even yourself. His grin widened, and you immediately regretted your decision.
"I dare you to kiss the most attractive person in the circle," he said, leaning back with an exaggerated shrug. "Simple enough, right?"
Your heart stopped. The room erupted into a mix of cheers and laughter, but all you could hear was the blood rushing in your ears. You scanned the circle, your gaze inevitably landing back on Dylan. He raised an eyebrow, his smirk daring you to make your move.
"No pressure," he added, though the mischievous twinkle in his eye said otherwise.
You took a deep breath, trying to steady the butterflies threatening to escape your chest. The room seemed to hold its collective breath as you leaned toward him. His smirk faltered for a split second, replaced by something softer, more genuine, as your lips brushed his.
The kiss was quick, almost shy, but the room exploded in whoops and applause as you pulled back. Dylan's eyes searched yours, a flicker of surprise and something else lingering there.
"Bold choice," he murmured, his voice low enough for only you to hear.
"You dared me," you shot back, trying to play it cool despite the heat rising in your cheeks.
The game moved on, but the air between you and Dylan crackled with unspoken tension. Every so often, your eyes would meet, and his grin would tilt just a little softer, a little more knowing.
By the end of the night, as the crowd began to thin and the music faded, Dylan caught up with you by the front door.
"Hey," he said, scratching the back of his neck in a rare moment of hesitation. "About that dare..."
"What about it?" you asked, your heart pounding.
"I'm really glad you picked me," he admitted, his grin returning in full force. "But next time, maybe I'll dare myself to kiss you instead."
Your laugh was nervous but genuine as he leaned closer, his voice dropping. "Unless you want to beat me to it again?"
And this time, the butterflies in your chest didn't feel so scary.
