Stevie
An hour later I'm in the passenger seat of the Impala, driving around the back roads in the afternoon sun. It's just the two of us avoiding our own thoughts as I go through his cassette tapes. When it comes to defending Sam I'm not afraid to open my mouth, but my own problems are a different story.
"We should go see the new Mummy movie on Friday night," I suggest and he turns his head to tease me with a grin.
"So you can check out Brendan Fraser?"
I wear a guilty smile. "Maybe."
"You know I might not swing that way but I can't blame you there," he says and I raise my eyebrows at him. "Besides, Rachel Weisz..." he whistles and I just laugh.
"Can't blame you there either," I admit and he raises an eyebrow at me. "Come on, it'll be good."
"Thought there was some kind of party on Friday, you should go and take Sam with you," he mentions, desperate to get Sam out of the house and away from his books for a night. "Heard Sam talking about it on the phone to someone. Some sort of prom pre-party before Saturday. Your school still combines your prom with the juniors right?"
"At this point I don't even know if I want to go," I admit to him and he looks over, confused.
"Why not?" he asks and pieces it together. "You don't have a date yet."
"I-" I begin, struggling to come up with an excuse.
"Why not?" he exclaims despite seeming proud. "I'm sure that Sam and I haven't scared all the guys off. They should be fighting over who gets to take you." I roll my eyes and turn my head to hide the warmth in my face. "It's true, and if you don't like any of them then you should get Sam to take you."
"You're right, I don't like any of them," I say, borderline disgusted at the thought of most of the guys in my class and fully disgusted at the remainder. "And as for Sam... I don't know about that."
What I do know is that Sam's planning on asking Rachel Nave and that he doesn't want Dean to know for whatever reason, and so I keep my mouth shut.
"Look, just between you and me if you're going with Sam you don't have to hide it."
That catches me off guard and I splutter "What?"
"Come on Stevie, it's me you're talking to not Bobby," he says and my head falls back against the headrest knowing where he's going with this. "I'd get if you didn't want Bobby to know since Sam's living there and you don't want to make anything weird, but it's not like we haven't been expecting it. Two kids who've always been as close as the two of you are... it's natural."
"Dean," I say slowly, speaking nothing but the complete truth. "There is nothing going on between me and Sam."
"Then what was-"
"Sam's like my brother Dean," I say for the hundredth time. "And I know you're trying to be a wingman but there's nothing going on and that goes for Sam as well. He is in no way interested in me and it's mutual."
"Yeah sure," he dismisses and my eyes widen in pure frustration.
"God forbid I give my best friend a hug, hell give someone who's practically my brother a hug, without you thinking it's something more!" I end up exclaiming and lecture with a finger pointed at him. "You see Dean, this is the shit that porn does people. It screws with their perception of relationships until they look at two people who are like siblings and think they want to fuck."
His eyebrows shoot up and he opens his mouth to argue but ends up choking in panic "Don't give me your feminist propaganda."
"It's a damn fact and you know it," I say, still borderline traumatised after searching for a VHS in his room a month back only to find some others that I sure as hell didn't want to see and I'm damn sure he knows it too.
