The water temperature was pleasantly cool, but Lu Nong in the bathtub was dissatisfied and began to fuss, clinging to Pei Jiaan's neck. "Mmm, it's so hot..."
In the small bathroom, the summer heat seemed to be intensified by something rising in the air. Pei Jiaan's clothes were wet all over. He pulled Lu Nong back down into the tub and opened a window, letting the fresh breeze disperse the stuffiness.
A knock came from the next room. Pei Jiaan stepped out of the bathroom to find Aunt Wu standing at the door to his and Lu Nong's bedroom, holding a tray with a few cups of water on it.
"Sir, how is the young lady doing?" Aunt Wu asked, her brows furrowed with worry.
Though Pei Jiaan's face still held a chill, upon sensing Aunt Wu's genuine concern, he paused for a moment and said, "She's fine, you don't need to worry too much. I'll take good care of her. It's late; you should go to sleep."
After saying this, he took the tray from Aunt Wu's hands and intended to return to the bathroom.
"Well... alright then. If you need anything, don't forget to call me. I know how to take care of the young lady; she's been spoiled since childhood. When she's sick, she loves to throw tantrums and act cute, so be a little more patient with her," Aunt Wu said, rattling off a series of reminders. Suddenly, she seemed to remember something, "Oh, you and the young lady didn't finish your dinner. I'll go make you some late-night snacks. With her like this, she won't be able to eat properly. Cooking sweet soup with eggs would be just right."
Pei Jiaan didn't show any impatience while listening to Aunt Wu. He knew she wouldn't feel at ease unless she had something to do. He replied gently, "Thank you."
"Ah, you're welcome!" Aunt Wu's face brightened at Pei Jiaan's agreement. "I'll go make it right now."
After taking a couple of steps, Aunt Wu hesitated, turned back, and called out to Pei Jiaan. Clasping her hands together, she said nervously, "Sir, I owe you an apology. I've misunderstood you all along."
Aunt Wu explained in detail, "When I first came here, Xiao Zheng and Xiao Shen were unfriendly towards Nong Nong. Not long after, your sister came over and scolded Nong Nong. I felt heartbroken for her. To put it bluntly, although she had Xiao Huai with her, she's only in her twenties, and your son is about the same age. Plus, she has a rude sister-in-law and in-laws whose attitudes are still unclear. You can imagine how difficult it must be for her."
"Also, last time I heard from the sister-in-law that your reluctance to marry is somewhat related to your ex-wife. I don't know if that's true, but it's definitely harsh to hear. All these incidents have made this old woman worry for the young lady, so..."
Aunt Wu glanced at Pei Jiaan's expression and saw he didn't look angry; in fact, he was patiently listening to her. After a deep breath, she finished, "So I've been making tonic soup for you every day, leading everyone to misunderstand that you are unwell. But don't worry, they are all gentle, nutritious foods that won't harm your health."
Pei Jiaan: "..."
He rubbed his temples, thinking it was no wonder Lu Nong had such a narrow-minded temperament. It seemed true that people of a feather flock together.
Pei Jiaan solemnly promised Aunt Wu, "You can rest assured. I understand your concerns, and I will handle things at home and with my ex-wife."
He had never had a normal family or a normal marriage. In his youth, perhaps someone tried to make him feel wronged, but once he truly grew up, those people might have complained about him behind his back or in their hearts, yet they never dared to say anything in front of him.
