Chapter 2:
“Alright, is everyone ready for the finale of your tour?” Dad shouted from inside the back yard to the families waiting on the on the outside of the front three gates. It’s June 30th and everyone had just gotten a tour of their new home from one of us or one of the workers. The moms were all teary eyed with happiness and excitement from having such a nice new place to live. Their homes now were all run down and way more than what they could legitimately afford so now to have a nice and remodeled place to live with only having to pay a little bit for rent the families are ecstatic.
Every kid yelled and cheered while the parents all clapped and some yelled too. I’m sure everyone for the next few blocks could hear them and were wondering what was going on. The closest houses had people peeking out their windows or standing on their front porches to see what was going on since earlier this morning when cars started showing up.
Dad was standing at the middle gate with Daryn on the left and Mom on the right while Tom, Barry, a couple workers that had helped out with the tours and I were all waiting inside the yard. “On the count of three!” Dad shouted and everyone joined in on counting.
When everyone yelled, “Three!” Dad, Mom and Daryn opened the gates and everyone filtered in. All the kids instantly went to the playground in the middle of the duplexes and the parents mostly looked around excited.
The yard is the size of a football field completely surrounded by a cherry stained fence with gates in between each building. All the apartments had a sliding glass door that opened up to the back yard and one foot thick gardens along the walls with short fences surrounding them. In the middle was a big playground with a huge play set. The play set had everything we could manage to fit into it, multiple levels, lots of climbing areas of all types, four slides—two spiral ones and two straight the longer of each were enclosed--, 5 swings plus a tire swing, and lots more. On one side of the play set were two play houses. On the other was a playground surrounded by a white picket fence for the really small kids that weren’t big enough for the big play set. The little play set had its own swings, slides and climbers along with a sandbox full of toys.
Almost half the yard was spit with a tall wire fence and a big shed/greenhouse. The fenced in area had synthetic grass like a real sports field would have and had a shed of its own to store the sports equipment. There was another gate in the wood fence that went into a basketball court which was also surrounded by the tall fence like the other sports area.
All the kids were still playing and way too excited over the play area to notice the wrapped boxes on everyone’s patio. Mom had talked to each parent and gotten every kid’s name, age, and clothing size along with what kinds of things they liked. The whole family had spent the last three days buying everyone clothes and toys then boxing everything up for the kids.
After almost an hour it was getting time for lunch and the kids still hadn’t noticed their presents but were much more interested in exploring every inch of the playground and the other kids, some older than me, were all playing in the field or court having already known about the presents but were told they had to wait until the younger kids had finished exploring before they would get anything.
Caryn and I were running round and climbing on the play set with the kids when Dad whistled to get everyone’s attention. “Alright, now that I have your attention again would everyone please find their patio please.” He announced to everyone then waited while our family and the workers joined him and the families made their way to their patios, guided by the apartment numbers by the doors. One everyone was where they were supposed to be he started again. “As I am sure all the kids have noticed by now, there are presents sitting by each of your doors. Please find the one with your name on it and wait until I say go to open them. Ok, parents, each of your doors are unlocked and inside you will find in the top drawer by your refrigerator an envelope with your house and mail keys and other important documents. Please take the time to go through them and store them in a safe place for future reference. We will now let you all enjoy your new homes and start settling in, Contact myself or your manager if you have any problems, all numbers are in your paperwork.” Dad started leading us toward the front middle gate. Once we were all through and was the last left he spoke again “Good-bye and we will be in touch.” Then he went through the gate. Acting like he forgot something he poked his head back through and yelled “Go” then slammed it shut to the sounds of all the little kids yelling with excitement as they tore into their boxes.
