The days after the kiss were different, though neither Emma nor Nate dared to bring it up directly. They kept on spending time together—long walks on the beach, quiet conversations over dinner—and yet, somehow, there was an unspoken tension between them now, a charged energy that neither of them knew how to navigate.
For Emma, the feelings growing inside her were slowly turning everything into chaos. The final stages of the Harbor Creek hotel were coming and there was her boss calling more often than in previous days asking to know updates that are taking place and being done more quickly. And even if she went about doing her work, she couldn't avoid being dragged into her thoughts of Nate-to his smile, the way his voice softened when speaking to her, the way she felt when he surrounded her.
One afternoon, Emma sat at a small café in town, laptop open in front of her, pretending to review blueprints but instead watching the townspeople go about their day. The simplicity of Harbor Creek had begun to feel like a balm to her soul, so different from the frantic pace of New York. But the hotel she was crashing at here felt like something looming against her, something that didn't go well with this life she was beginning to fall for.
And then there was Nate.
Emma sighed, staring blankly at her screen when a voice interrupted her thoughts."Hey, lost in thought?"
She looked up to see Sarah, the owner of the café, friendly and ever-curious about the town and whatever may be related to it. She was holding a fresh cup of coffee. Emma smiled at the distraction.
"Something like that," Emma said, closing her laptop slightly so she faced Sarah as Sarah sat across from her.
"Work? Or Nate?" Sarah asked, eyeing her with a playful glint in her eye, full well knowing they were growing closer and closer.
Emma laughed low, though the question struck a chord. "I'm not sure it's that simple anymore."Sarah looked at him with a turned head, softening her face. "Nothing ever is when there are feelings involved. But the question remains, what do you want really?
Emma leaned back in her chair, letting her gaze drift out the window. What did she want? She had spent her whole life running after success, scaling the corporate ladder, proving herself worthy. This project in Harbor Creek was supposed to be another step up, another knockout hotel that would advance her through the ranks. But the idea of leaving this town, of leaving Nate, was suddenly almost too much to bear.
"I don't know," Emma admitted. "I love what I do, but being here... it's made me question everything. And Nate... he's—"
"He's a good man," Sarah finished for her, nodding. "I've known him since he was a kid. He's been through a lot, but I've never seen him open up the way he has with you."
Emma felt a pang of guilt. She knew Nate had been hurt before, that there was a part of him still healing from whatever tragedy had brought him back to Harbor Creek. Now, here she was, possibly uprooting his life once more by bringing in a hotel he saw as a threat to the town he loved.
Sarah must have seen the battle raging inside Emma's head because she placed a reassuring hand on her arm. "You don't need to decide anything today, Emma. But you know, sometimes it changes what we think we want when we find something worth holding onto.".
In response, Emma nodded-she was still uncertain-but the more time she spent in Harbor Creek, the more she realized her life in New York and her growing feelings for Nate were pulling her in two very different directions.
That evening, Emma walked to the bed-and-breakfast with thoughts spinning in her head. She knew she had to discuss things with Nate and try to figure out what this might mean for both of them. On her arrival, she found Nate sitting on the porch steps off on the ground, gazing out across the stars sprinkled across a clear night sky.
He glanced up when he saw her approach, and for a second, they sat there, the silent tension between them building until it seemed to fill the air. Emma took a deep breath and sat beside him, unsure of how she was going to say the things she had to say, though she knew they needed to be said.
"Nate," she said softly but steady, "we need to talk."He turned toward her, his face unreadable. "I know.".Emma took another deep breath, as she tried to calm her galloping heart. "I don't know what is going on between us but. it's not something I can ignore any longer. And I don't think you can either either."
Nate looked away, and his jaw clenched up. "You're right. This-this us-is complicated, Emma. You have your life in New York, your career and I.I can't leave this place. I won't.He'd said some of the most painful things ever to her chest with words, though she'd warned him they might come. "I don't want you to go," Emma said hastily. "But I don't know if I can stay either. My career-it's everything for me. And this hotel. ''The hotel,' Nate muttered, shaking his head. 'It's going to change everything here."."I do," Emma whispered, wracked by guilt. "I never meant to hurt you, Nate. But I'm stuck between the life that I've built and the life I might want."
For a long moment, Nate said nothing. The silence between them stretched on, heavy with unspoken emotion and impossible choice. When he finally spoke, his voice was thick with frustration.
"I've lost so much already, Emma. I don't know if I can handle losing this town—or you—too."Emma's heart broke at the vulnerability in his voice, and tears pricked the corners of her eyes. She hadn't realized just how deeply this hotel project had affected him, how much it represented to him.
"Nate, I don't want to lose you either," she said in a barely audible voice. "But I'm afraid I already have."
They sat there in silence, the night air cool and crisp around them, both struggling to come to terms with the realization that no matter how much they wanted each other, the life they lived—and the choices they had to make—might tear them apart.
