The days began to stretch out, a delicate balancing act that left Emma emotionally frayed. She spent a good deal more time in Nate's company than she would ever have expected; though her professional responsibilities seemed to loom like a shadow over every moment they shared. Every morning, passing by the construction site on her way to it, she endured the oppression of the two futures there: the hotel, and whatever she and Nate could be.
One afternoon, while Emma worked on finishing designs at the site, her phone vibrated with a message from her boss, Valerie.
Need those final blueprints by tomorrow. No delays, Emma. The investors are getting anxious. Her brow creased as she read the message. No delays. There never were. Her professional life had always been set in stone by perfection, deadlines, pushes to the edge. Now, standing on the bluff at sunset, her mind turned to streets of silence and to Nate's warmth and steady heartbeat. Her hand hung over her phone, holding something over the phone as if telling Valerie something back was going to seal her fate.
Several hours later, she found herself back on Nate's porch, in the gloaming, alive with shades of pink and gold. But between them, a comfortable silence had come to exist, one she grew accustomed to sharing often. He was mending an old fishing net; his hands moved methodically as Emma watched, a mix of admiration and sadness tugging at her heart.
"How do you do it?" she asked suddenly, her voice breaking the quiet.Nate glanced up, brow furrowing slightly. "Do what?""Live like this," Emma gestured around her, "with so much peace, so much... contentment. Aren't you ever tempted to leave, to see what's out there?"Nate stops and sets the net, side, then reaches around to rub with his wet hands on his jeans and looks out to the fading sunlight. "I've seen what's out there, Emma. I've spent years traveling, chasing sunsets and new horizons. But it didn't bring me what I thought it would. In the end, I figured that peace has nothing to do with where you are, it's about who you're with and what you hold close."
She accepted what he had said, knowing these were not just abstract claims but personal testimonies of loss, ones he hadn't, until then, been fully and willingly opening to her about. She felt the fragility of the moment, as if they stood at the edge of something she and he both knew they could hardly control.
"I thought I had everything I wanted," Emma whispered, to herself really, rather than to Nate. "But now I'm not sure anymore.".
Nate's eyes softened as he looked at her, and for a moment, there was nothing but silence between them. "What do you not know?"
Emma looked at him, her heart pounding. "I'm not certain if I can keep doing this—balancing two worlds. Not sure if I can give up my career. or you.
Nate winced, his jaw clenching up that way he always did when something was bothering him. "You don't have to choose, Emma. I've said that before."
"But I do," Emma pressed on, her voice quivering. "Because if I stay here, I'm not just staying for the hotel. I'm staying for you. And if I go... I'll lose you. I'll lose us.".
Nate had risen, his back to her, and paced over to the railing on the porch, as if looking out into the sea outside. "I don't want you to have to give up your dreams for me," he explained. "I've seen people who do this too much for someone else. Always, it ends in resentment, regret.Emma slowly gets up, her heart beating and moving forward to him. "You are not taking from me anything, Nate," she said. But maybe I am for the first time in my life realizing that my dreams have shifted. Maybe what I wanted isn't enough anymore.
He swung his torso to face her, the contour on his face pullling in opposite directions. "Emma, I can't be your reason for staying," he said. "You have to want this life. This place. And I don't know if you do."
She took a step closer, her voice slightly shaking with emotion. "What if I do? What if I'm just afraid to admit it because I've spent my whole life chasing something else?He looked at her face, and for a moment the world stopped. Emma's heart pounded against her ribs as the weight of such a future balance settled in his mouth to speak.
"I want you happy, Emma," Nate said softly, breaking into the hush. "But I can't make that decision for you.".
Tears welled up in Emma's eyes as she heard the truh in his words. She had to decide; either to remain in Harbor Creek and accept the quiet, simple life that Nate proposed or go back to New York and that ambitious career, which had defined her for so long. But how could she choose between two people she came to be?
And so, the following morning, Emma stood on that beach as the wind ruffled her hair, looking out into the turbulent waves, the sun just getting up, its golden rays spreading softly on the liquid surface, for the first time in a long time clear.
Her cell phone buzzed once more with an accusatory message from Valerie, reminding her that time was running out. Emma didn't respond. Instead, she turned her phone off and tucked it into her pocket.
The decision was hers to make-for now, though, all she wanted was some quiet. At the same time, she heard him behind her. She stopped turning away from the beach and turned to see Nate face unreadable as he came up to her. For a long beat, they stood there without a word, building tension between them.
Nate didn't say a thing but reached out, taking her hand in his. Emma looked up at him with a pounding heart.
"Whatever you choose," Nate whispered, "I'm here.".
Emma pressed his hand, her heart full to bursting. She did not know what the future would be like; but in that moment, she knew that at least one thing was certain – Nate was the anchor for her to hang onto as she navigated through the storm of uncertainty.
And standing there shoulder to shoulder with him, looking out over the waves rolling in, Emma thought maybe, just maybe, she didn't have to choose. Maybe there was a way to have one or the other.
