Rita was getting more and more nervous, the sounds outside had gotten louder and she kept imagining she heard footsteps behind her.

She finally got to her front porch and something clattered behind her. She gasped and spun around; there was nothing, only the wooden brush on the grill swinging in the wind. She quickly unlocked the door and hurried into the house and shut the night out.

''Rita? Is that you?''

''Yeah, Mom, it's me.''

Rita's mom, Ellen Walker, came around the corner looking slightly agitated. It didn't take away from her beauty though, she was a lady with beautiful, brown-red hair, and stunning hazel eyes. Rita's other three siblings had inherited those features, but Rita had inherited her father's.

''Why are you so late? Did you walk?'' Mrs. Walker asked.

''Yes, I did, sorry,'' replied Rita a little sheepishly while removing her bag.

''You know, I really would prefer you not do that when you're alone,'' said Mrs. Walker putting a hand to her forehead in exasperation, ''You'll be 18 soon, but until then could you please try to listen?''

''I know, it was kind of a dumb idea. I scared myself with a wild animal and a deer, so I won't be doing that again,'' promised Rita.

''Okay, because the last thing I want is for something to happen to you. Now, I have news about Grandma.''

''How is she?'' asked Rita anxiously. Her mother's mom was in the hospital because of heart problems, and they feared she wouldn't recover. Rita had been very close to her Grandma all her life; they had played, laughed, prayed, and adventured together. It was difficult to think of losing her.

''Not so good,'' said Mrs. Walker sadly, ''I was just about to say some prayers for her with the other kids. Will you join us?''

''Sure. Where's Dad?''

''He's working late. He'll be home later.''

Bedtime:

Rita turned on her bedside lamp and glanced around her room at the different decorations she had on the walls and ceiling. She nodded with satisfaction, it was as pretty as ever. She closed her door and hung her crucifix necklace on its spot near the wall where she always pinned little post-it notes with prayers on them.

She picked up her notepad and pen and wrote another: Please help my Grandma get better. She paused, and then with a sigh added: or take her to Heaven if that is better for her.

Rita hoped her Grandma would have more time, but she had no way of knowing what was best. She wanted to hold tightly to her and keep her from going anywhere; but that seemed almost selfish.

She looked at the wall for a while in deep thought, thinking over her day. She then picked up another note and wrote: Dear God, those seven brothers don't look too happy. Please help them.

This reminded her of the incident outside with the deer. She shivered a little and put up another note: I pray that the deer didn't suffer.

She didn't usually pray for animals since they didn't go to Heaven, but she'd sometimes pray that they'd be taken care of.

Something suddenly thunked against her window and she jumped. She was already unnerved by the monster stories and the bloody deer and the strange sounds outside. She carefully crept to the window and looked out at the brilliant moon. It was bright but wasn't bright enough for her to see the ground.
