. . .

It is my birthday tonight and I will be turning 15 years old. This is a special birthday because my grandparents flew in from Oregon. They only used to come to my birthday when I was very young but for this birthday, they surprised me and I couldn't be happier about it. I am excited because my entire family has gathered here for my birthday. My parents, my friends, my grandparents, my aunts and uncles and also my cousins, they are all here. We are waiting for midnight for the official celebration. I had been playing with my cousins and my friends the entire day, they are here rarely and I make every moment we share count.

The time has come for the celebration and for me to make a wish and cut the cake. Everyone has gathered around me and has started singing the birthday song. I never knew what to do when they begin singing it, always felt awkward and strange when it happens. What are you truly supposed to do when it happens? 'Make a wish! Jake...' My mom says, her arms resting on my shoulders as she stands on my right side. Everyone is looking at me with smiles on their faces, surrounding me. This feels like a horror movie. The lights are all turned off and the only light source is from the candles and the flashing cameras. I have so many things I could wish for. So, so many. I wish that I could have an amazing and exciting experience in life. I closed my eyes as I made the wish and I blew out the candles. My family and friends began clapping and it has never been that loud. I looked around in that moment, all eyes were on me and I couldn't be happier but the more I thought, the lonelier I felt. This is all temporary, they will all leave soon. I cut the cake and picked up a small piece which I fed my parents. I ate the remaining piece and it was delicious.

Everyone ate the cake; it was not much but we all shared. Some of them don't like cake so they didn't have any but I don't believe they do not like cake. They chose to be left out so that others could have it. The ones to do this were the older members of my family. The children and I ate what was given to us. We ate food before the cake-cutting so there was no need to eat more food after eating the cake. This was a time for something fun and exciting, something I had been waiting for this whole day and that is gift opening. Everyone gathered around to the table which had all the gifts on it. They are all wrapped neatly and some of the gifts are quite big but some are small. I do not mind the smaller gifts because it is the thought that counts. I do not plan on making this into a big drama, after all, all of this is mine anyway. My hand reached out to one of the bigger gifts and I read out the message that was on it, it said 'Happy birthday, Jakey. Love, Uncle Matthew.' He is my uncle from my father's side and he has always been the fun one. He always listens to make sure that I get what I had been asking for and I had already planted something in his mind. I tear off the wrapping, so eager to see what has been hiding all this time. I get a glimpse of it and I push the box away and gasp. 'You did not...' I say in awe. Nearly everyone around me had been recording and they all let out a laugh when I said that. 'Yes! I did!' Uncle Matthew says pridefully. It is death star Lego set, I have always wanted one of these and now I finally got it, all thanks to uncle Matthew. I cannot wait to tear this box apart and get busy building.

I have opened majority of the presents and they were all pretty great. The people who do not know me that well enough just got me a few hundred dollars which I am not complaining about, I will be spending that money wisely. I would very much love the freedom to buy something that I desire. It is time to open the present that my parents got me, it is the smallest out of them all, I even forgot that this present was here because it is just too small to be noticed. I slowly grab the small box and slowly tear off the wrapping as I stare at my parents. They are holding each other's hands while they look at me with a strange smile on their face. I finally managed to tear off the wrapping and I am shocked. They got me the latest iPhone! It is the iPhone 5. 'Happy birthday, Jake.' My dad says in a calm voice. I look at them and I am speechless. I wanted an iPhone for so long, I never had a phone of my own let alone an iPhone. I get up from my chair and bolt in their arms. 'Thank you so much! Thank you! Thank you!' I say as my voice begins breaking and my eyes in tears. I cannot wait to be one of the cool kids in school. They had been hiding more than just this phone. They placed a phone case and a new sim card in front of me to use. This feels so unreal and unexpected, I thought I would need to buy myself a phone by saving up but they just came through and got it for me on my birthday. I looked around at my family and they seem so happy for me, and seeing them so happy makes me happy. A strange feeling in my chest which only arises when I am extremely happy and this is that time when it arose.
