The ancient cobblestones of Rome's Trastevere district echoed under Alexander's feet as he wove through the narrow, labyrinthine streets. The warm glow of streetlamps cast long shadows, transforming the picturesque neighborhood into a chiaroscuro maze of light and dark. It was a fitting metaphor, he thought grimly, for the murky world of espionage he found himself trapped in.
Jack's voice crackled in his earpiece. "Target's on the move. Heading east on Via della Lungara."
"Copy that," Alexander murmured, his eyes scanning the sparse late-night crowd for any sign of their quarry - or of Chimera operatives who might be lying in wait.
It had been three days since their narrow escape from the back door to The Eyrie. Three days of cat-and-mouse games across Europe, always one step ahead of Dravenko's forces, but never quite far enough to catch their breath. The revelation of Alexander's potential role as an unwitting double agent had cast a pall over the group, a constant undercurrent of tension and mistrust.
But now, finally, they had a lead. A Chimera defector, code-named "Janus," had reached out through encrypted channels, offering crucial information about the organization's structure and plans. In exchange, he wanted extraction and immunity. It was a risk, but one they had to take.
Alexander rounded a corner and caught sight of their target - a slight, nervous-looking man in his forties, constantly glancing over his shoulder as he hurried down the street. Janus.
"I have eyes on him," Alexander reported. "Moving to intercept."
He quickened his pace, closing the distance between them. Just as he was about to call out to Janus, a flicker of movement in his peripheral vision made him freeze.
A woman had emerged from a doorway, her hand reaching into her coat. Even in the dim light, Alexander could see the telltale bulge of a concealed weapon.
"Chimera!" he shouted, breaking into a sprint. "Jack, we've got company!"
The woman's head snapped towards him, her eyes widening in recognition. In one fluid motion, she drew her gun and fired.
Alexander dove, the bullet whistling past his ear. He rolled, coming up behind a parked Vespa as more shots rang out. Pedestrians screamed, fleeing in panic.
Janus stood frozen in the middle of the street, terror etched on his face. Alexander made a split-second decision.
"Run!" he yelled at the defector. "Head for the river! We'll cover you!"
Janus didn't need to be told twice. He bolted, disappearing down a side street.
The Chimera operative was moving now, trying to flank Alexander's position. He peered around the scooter, catching a glimpse of her advancing form. With practiced precision, he lined up his shot and squeezed the trigger.
The woman cried out, stumbling as Alexander's bullet found its mark in her shoulder. But she was well-trained, already rolling to cover despite the injury.
"Alexander!" Jack's voice, urgent in his ear. "I've got a clear shot, but there are civilians in the area. Your call."
Alexander gritted his teeth. The last thing they needed was collateral damage, but if the operative got away, she could alert Chimera to Janus' location.
"Take it," he ordered.
A sharp crack split the air, and the woman crumpled to the ground, Jack's shot finding its target with lethal accuracy.
Alexander was on his feet in an instant, sprinting towards the fallen operative. He knelt beside her, checking for signs of life, but it was too late. Her glassy eyes stared up at the night sky, unseeing.
