Episode 1: Sparks in the Arena (Continued)
---
As evening fell, the air grew crisp and filled with the scent of burning wood and roasted marshmallows. The bonfire crackled brightly in the center of the clearing, surrounded by groups of students chatting and laughing, their faces illuminated by the warm glow of the flames. It was a perfect night to unwind before the competition, and Sable couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and anxiety.
She stood off to the side, watching as her teammates gathered around the fire, some strumming guitars while others roasted marshmallows, their laughter echoing in the night. Mars was among them, her blonde hair shining in the firelight as she animatedly recounted a story, her voice cutting through the laughter like a beacon.
Sable felt a pang of longing as she noticed how effortlessly Mars drew people in. It was both infuriating and captivating to watch, especially when Talia leaned in closer, laughing at something Mars said. Why did that bother her?
Taking a deep breath, Sable moved closer to the fire, determined to shake off the jealousy that had been lurking in her mind since she witnessed the kiss. She found a spot on a log next to Kayla, who was busy squishing a marshmallow between two graham crackers.
"Hey, Sable! You want one?" Kayla asked, holding out a gooey s'more.
"No, thanks. I'm good," Sable replied, forcing a smile. Her gaze drifted back to Mars, who was now sharing a joke with Talia.
"Looks like Mars is having a great time," Kayla said, following Sable's gaze. "You two are still on the same team, right? I mean, rivalry aside?"
"Yeah," Sable replied, her voice tight. "Rivalry aside."
"Just don't let it get in the way of having fun. We're all here to support each other," Kayla added, nudging Sable playfully.
"Support each other, sure," Sable said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "And by support, you mean cheering each other on while stealing kisses?"
Kayla raised an eyebrow. "Oh come on, it's not like that! You know Mars isn't like that. She's just... well, Mars."
"Yeah, 'just Mars,'" Sable echoed, her tone betraying her annoyance. She glanced back at Mars, who was now roasting marshmallows with Talia, their chemistry undeniable.
"You know, it's okay to feel a little jealous sometimes," Kayla said gently. "You guys have this whole competitive thing going on, but it doesn't mean you can't be friends too."
"Friends?" Sable replied, incredulous. "I don't know if I can be just friends with someone who kisses other girls right in front of me."
Kayla shrugged. "Maybe you just need to talk to her about how you feel. Honestly, it might help clear the air before the competition next week."
"Right," Sable said, rolling her eyes. "Like I'd actually spill my guts about my feelings at a bonfire party."
"Why not? If you don't, you'll keep feeling this way," Kayla encouraged, nudging Sable playfully. "What's the worst that could happen?"
Sable considered this, stealing another glance at Mars, who had just taken a bite of her perfectly roasted marshmallow. Maybe Kayla was right. But what if it ruined their rivalry? What if it changed everything?
As if sensing her gaze, Mars looked up and met Sable's eyes. A smile spread across her face, and she waved, the friendly gesture pulling at Sable's heart.
