Two Eevees dashed through the bushes, dodging twigs and jumping over roots, their laughter echoing through the quiet forest. The air was filled with the sweet scent of ripe berries, and their paw prints were visible in the soft, moist moss on the forest floor.

“Ha ha! Tag, you’re it!” Winter, the older Eevee, called out as he tagged his brother and grabbed onto a vine, swinging across the small river with a smirk. He landed on the other side, looking back at his brother with a mischievous smile.

“Hey, no fair, Winter! You cheated!” Glacier, the younger Eevee, panted as he tried to catch up to his brother. “You used the vines to your advantage! That’s not fair!”

“Too bad!” Winter grinned, taking a few steps back from the river shore as he waited for Glacier to jump over. “The rules didn’t say I can’t! You just gotta get faster!”

Glacier narrowed his eyes, a hint of annoyance in his voice, though the smile on his face gave him away. “Well, I can’t get faster if you’re cheating!”

Winter laughed, standing on the other side and waiting for his brother. “Come on, hurry up, slowpoke! It's nearly lunchtime!”

At the thought of lunch, Glacier lunged with all his energy and pounced on Winter. “Got you!” he exclaimed, a wide smile spreading across his face.

Winter laughed, nodding in defeat. “Alright, alright, you got me.”

They both walked slowly toward the treehouse they lived in, breathing heavily and with their fur tousled from the chase.

After a moment of silence, Glacier turned to Winter. “Do you think we’ll be like this forever? Just the two of us, exploring the world with Mom and Dad?”

Winter looked at his little brother. “Of course, Glacier. We’ll always have each other, but Mom and Dad will leave us once we’re grown up.”

“Yeah, but by then we’ll be all grown up, right?” Glacier asked.

Winter smiled at his brother’s curiosity. “Of course we will, but if we don't go eat lunch now, we won’t be big and strong when we grow up.”

“Then I’ll race you there!” Glacier said excitedly as he dashed toward home.

Winter smirked. “Oh, it’s on!”

The two brothers dashed home, excited for lunch. But they had no way of knowing how much they would one day long for peaceful moments like this, for the freedom that would one day be stripped from them.
