The two brothers were with their parents shopping in the town market.
“Moooooooooooooommmmmm, can we get some berry ice cream?” Glacier whined as they walked throughout the market.
“Now just a few more items before we go home, Glacier,” their mother, Chione the Glaceon, said.
“But mom, it's so tiring!” Winter complained as well.
“Fine, fine, we can get ice cream after this,” said Rayo, their Jolteon father.
Looks like the twins’ plan of looking cute and constant begging worked again.
“Rayo, you’re spoiling them too much!” Chione said while playfully squeezing her husband's cheeks.
“But you love ice cream as well! You told me you evolved once because you wanted to create popsicles all day,” Rayo teased, only for his mouth to be clamped shut by Chione’s paw.
“I told you not to mention it,” Chione said with a light blush, clearly embarrassed by her childhood obsession with icy treats.
“Fine, I guess we can get some ice cream.” Chione sighed in surrender, already craving some herself.
The family finished their shopping and walked towards the ice cream shop. Along the way, they saw some warnings on the adventurer billboard.
“Hm? This is new…. Definitely was put up after my mission today…” Rayo said as they stopped to read the posters.
“Signs of burnt trees, scratch marks, and a blurry sighting of some sort of Pokémon? That’s not usual, is it, honey?” Chione asked anxiously, since there weren’t many wild fire-type Pokémon nearby.
“I’ll look into it tomorrow with Erebus. Maybe there’s a wild pack of Pokémon nearby.”
The family continued walking toward the ice cream shop.
“Thanks, Mom!” the brothers said as they licked their sweet, icy treats.
‘Burnt trees? The only kind of Pokémon that can do that are fire-types practising their moves… Why else would there be burnt trees? And with the scratch marks, it seems like some wild Pokémon was training? But I don't know how many there are…’ Rayo thought as he licked his ice cream and stared into space.
“Honey?” Chione asked, worried about her husband’s quiet reaction to the posters, since he was usually very talkative.
“Oh yeah?” Rayo snapped back to reality at the sound of his wife’s voice. He looked up to see Chione and the brothers looking at him worriedly.
“Is anything wrong, Dad?” Winter asked, confused by his father’s quietness.
“I’m fine, Winter, just… thinking about Dad’s work. No need to worry.” Rayo gave Winter a reassuring smile, even though deep down he was very alerted by the new information.
As the family of four enjoyed their ice cream and strolled back home under the setting sun, the cheerful chatter of the market faded into the evening's gentle hum. Winter and Glacier raced ahead, laughing and licking their treats in excitement, while Rayo and Chione lingered behind.
Sensing her husband's unease, Chione asked softly, "You're sure you're alright, dear?"
Rayo forced a smile, his thoughts still on the posters. "We'll figure it out tomorrow. For now, let's just enjoy the evening," he replied, glancing at the twins.
As they neared their cosy home, an unsettling stillness settled over the surroundings of the town. From a hidden cave nearby, a pair of glinting red eyes watched their every move. Hidden but planning, the figure remained perfectly still, cloaked by the darkness, yet exuding an aura of unease. It was the calm before the storm, unbeknownst to the happy family. The observer was already weaving threads of chaos that would soon shatter their peaceful lives, marking the beginning of a future filled with pain.
