IT WAS A CHILLY OCTOBER EVENING, and the wind outside was hinting at the onset of winter. Wyatt had arrived for his tutoring session, wearing a slightly oversized hoodie, hands stuffed in the pockets. There was something different about him today. His usual spark seemed dimmed, like he was carrying a weight that had grown heavier.

We started with the usual small talk, then dove into algebra. Wyatt was a sharp kid, but he was having trouble focusing.

His gaze would drift, and he'd shake his head, muttering, "Sorry," each time I gently brought him back to the math problem in front of him.

After a few more moments of him drifting off, I set my pen down. "Hey, Wyatt," I said, keeping my voice soft, "what's going on? You seem... out of it today."
