Hearts in Tune 2

“The environmental impact task force team is here ma, they’re demanding to see you.” Sameerah raised her head from her desktop computer to cast a red eyed look at her secretary who hovered at the door.

She was a ‘bitch’ sometimes at work, because she exacted so much perfection from them that it was impossible for them not to hate her. She hated how it had to be, but it was what it was. “Usman can’t do a simple thing like let them see how we’re storing and disposing our waste? Surely, all the salary SaAd food co pays is not for nothing?” She watched her secretary, an older forty something year old woman fold her lower lips trying not to squeak even in defense of Usman.

“Let’s go see what they want.” She picked up her veil and wrapped it around her face and torso, pinning it with a small magnetic strip she used to hold it in place. Once she looked presentable, she strode out the door, walking with her secretary to the main office area where she spied from the glass doors Usman being an incompetent simpering fool as usual.

She entered the room to greetings and a Salam on her part. Her Salam was returned and she carefully masked her face, took the seat Usman previously occupied and clasped her hands in front of her as she faced the men of the Enviromental task force created by the new governor to determine how much damage companies were causing to the environment. They consisted of nafdac officials, environmental officers and as far as she could see, SON officials.

“How May I be of help, gentlemen?” She asked in her best voice, she never used that tone around her father but it was the one she used when she became CEO of the company  her father first handed over to her.

“We found a trace of nitrate in the Kano River basin as a result of repeated pouring from your company.” Sameerah narrowed her eyes and tilted her head for a split second before schooling her features into a patronizing smile.

“I’d like to know though, how you’ve come to this conclusion?” What they didn’t know though, was that she employed a team of environmental officers who tested very carefully every single step of water they poured back into the river. It was filtered through of every single kind of chemical.

“Here, this is our result.” Their leader handed her a report. Sameerah turned to Usman and asked him to get their head of environmental protection quickly.

In the time it took Sameerah to read the flimsy report, the team lead had arrived and was hovering by the door. She passed him the report and asked him to explain.

“Ma’am, these are lies. I still tested the water from the river basin yesterday and they certain do not possses this large amounts of nitrate. These gentlemen might be economical with the truth.” Sameerah nodded and took out her phone, she dialed the number of the commissioner of environment.

She placed the phone on the table as it rang loudly echoing in the room. “Sameerah, Ina Kwana? To what do I owe this call?” She laughed and explained exactly why she had called.

“I’d like you to please send a special team, seems like there’s conflict and you know how we hate conflict so much. So that the wrong news does not go out.” The commissioner laughed and said he agreed and that a team would be there before noon to take water measurements and compare notes.

She ended the call to the horrified faces of the gentlemen in the room who looked as white as ghosts. “Are we done here? Usman? Mr Enviromental team lead? I’ll see you all tomorrow at ten am.” She left the room and turned right back to her office.
