As Maya and I stood at the entrance of the school, I could feel the adrenaline pulsing through my veins, mingling with the dull ache of the bruises that littered my body. "Ready?" Maya said, worry apparent in the crease of her eyebrows. I look up at her, my eyes sparkling, "Yeah let's show them our scars of battle," I say dramatically, dropping on one knee, valiantly. Maya's laugh reaches my ears like a comforting song.
Our hands clasped together as we push the wide doors open, united, battered, bruised—whatever you want to call it; together. As we walk in, I feel Maya's hand clenching hard on my palm. I wince ever so slightly, glancing at her face in worry but only seeing a triumphant smirk on her face as we make our way through the different hallways, blooming bruises proudly on display. I can hear the whispers, but I don't care; I smile a genuine smile, rejoicing in the moment of solidarity and loyalty Maya and I seem to share at this moment. We look at each other earnestly, a silent promise spoken.
The moment abruptly comes to an end as the echoey school intercom whines to life, almost making my ears bleed at the loud feedback. "Oh, god! Can this get any louder?" I hear a random girl say close to me. The intercom finally crackles to a stop, and I could almost see the collective sigh of relief ripple through the students.
Then, the secretary's voice came through, slightly muffled but still brimming with forced enthusiasm. "Attention, students! We're excited to announce this year's Winter Wonderland Dance happening next Friday; bring a date!" There was a shift in the atmosphere of the school as a myriad of excited chatter exploded all around us. I could hear the school's gossipers already talking a mile an hour, even though it's only been seconds. "Did you hear? I heard Dylan Anderson is going with Sarah!" a girl exclaimed, excitement infusing her voice. "Beth is totally going to ask Jason!" another girl's voice chimed in.
It felt like a wave of anticipation crashed over us, infusing the air with energy. I exchanged a glance with Maya, her eyes sparkling with mischief and excitement. "We should totally go," she whispered, her smile infectious. "Imagine the chaos we could create!"
I looked around, shifting my feet uncomfortably, fiddling with my camera carrier's straps. I turned and met Maya's eyes, brimming with barely contained excitement. "Um, you know... It's not really my scene," I say, trailing off, my gaze meeting the worn shoes at my feet.
"Oh, come on, think of all the fun we could have, spiking the punch bowl, making fun of people's attires," Maya continued to babble on and on, gesturing wildly with her fingers flailing. I took a moment to look at her, her excitement infectious as I thought that I could use a night off with Maya. It sure is unpredictable, but that's just Maya for you. I shake my head softly with a smile as she continues on with her idea of getting people drunk.
