Miss Brighton

"Good morning. I read over all your poems. I must say I'm impressed. For those who had me last year, I'm a little disappointed. Our system looks at growth and maturity not only your grades. The change in your character. What I read showed me little to no change. So... I'm going to give you projects to work on for the next month in groups of three"

"You are giving us a project so early?" Brandon's tone shows he is surprised and not trying to be a smart mouth.

"Yes, we have new students who are not used to my methods and I want them to be involved and adapt."

"Best teacher of the yearrrr" Irina looks at me with hearty eyes as always.

She has had a playful crush on me since I had her in my class.

"Teacher's pet" Cara fake coughs.

"That title goes to Damien. He is the one who had lunch with Ms Brighton before summer" Brandon teased making me roll my eyes.

"I can always pick a favorite. I won't lie and say I don't do favorites knowing I like people who surprises me in the intelligence field. Now let's discuss this week's topic. Emotional intelligence in literature"

I noticed how Arielle sat up straight to pay attention. She must have been really interested on the topic. I explained through the lesson hearing them give suggestions and what they already know was my favorite part.

"The amount of emotion you involve in your writing or your speech must not be over exaggerated. Let's talk about the best books you have read and the main emotions that held the book together. Hazel, you are my first pick since you read the most interesting books"  I move around the classroom space as I speak. It keeps them concentrated.

"The last Mrs Parrish by Liv Constantine" Hazel, a book worm who lives in the fantasy of pages. She smirks looking at me proudly.

"You never seize to amaze me. Please continue"

Hazel stands in front of everyone explaining the dark emotions of the book and I was hooked. I had read the book myself and it kept me on edge.

"Thank you Hazel, next I'm gonna skip you boring old folks. Let our new addition tell us what gets her on. Arielle you are next"

Arielle stands up and I see a wicked expression on her face for a second then it disappeared into an unreadable expression.

"Desert of the heart"

Her soft voice has my attention. She is looking right at me and I hate that I feel something when our eyes meet. I have amber eyes while hers are the greenest shade. They tell a story even from afar and I want to know. I want to know the story her eyes tell.

I hate how curious she is making me.

"I have never heard of it" I can tell Cara doesn't like Arielle from the get go but they are not kids. She will not act stupid.

I know they will be butting heads through every lesson and I don't mind. I love when my students challenge each other.

"It's a Sapphic Romance Novel written by Jane Rule" I explain to Cara who snaps her head towards my direction. Her eyebrows furrows then she sighs and slump in her seat.

Cara can be a brat sometimes. She loves to be favored even by me. But I don't give special treatment, it's a fact well known.

"Arielle please continue"

"The book goes through the emotions of obsession, desire, lust. Uncontrollable attraction between two women. They can't stop themselves. Addiction in the form of twisted love"

Arielle states making sure to look in my eyes as she spoke. As if she was only talking to me. I hate the pull I feel as I look at her. The need to discuss the book further but that is inappropriate.

I have a class to teach.

"Cara, you are next"

"Thrust by L.C Jordan"

I chuckle at her childish behavior. Cara only mentioned a lesbian novel because of Arielle. She wants to prove something. I let her have the stage.

My eyes move towards the girl in the corner. She is already staring at me. I raise my eyebrow which makes her look away instantly. So she is not bold, just curious about me.

After class Arielle doesn't leave right away. She is slow in packing her stuff then when the last student is out. She stands up holding a book in hand.

"Ms Brighton.." She stands in front of me.

"Yes?"

"What about your best of the best?. Your favorite book?" Arielle politely asks glancing down as my hands that are busy cleaning up my desk.

"Consequences written by Aleatha Romig" I lie.

Her dark eyes search for something in mine . She is calculating me, trying to figure something out.

"So your poison is something with the themes of control and obsession?" Her pale finger trail the edge of my desk as she waits for my answer. I can see the way her nails shine.

It makes me wonder why she is not wearing a colorful nail polish. The only thing that come to mind is restriction. She is not allowed. Someone has control over her.

"Maybe so. I enjoy something intense" I stop and stare up in her forestry eyes.

"I don't know if this is appropriate but I can give you a book that might suit your interests" She places the book in her arm on my table and push it to me all the while keeping her eyes on me.

She is alert.

Guarded.

Cautious.

She is intimidated by me.

"It is perfectly fine. Uhh Burned Bridges written by A.L.V." I read the title on the cover.

The cover has no picture of what's inside. It just gas a title and the rest is covered in white.

"I promise it's good. I have read it for over 50 times and I am now holding back from reading it for more than that. Some things are easy to get addicted to."

What is Arielle trying to hint at?.
