The heat of midsummer blanketed the little coastal town as cicadas hummed under the sweltering afternoon sun. Choi Yeonjun kicked a rock along the dirt path leading to the beach, his heart racing at the thought of seeing her again. The summer of 1997 had brought him more than just a break from the monotony of school; it had brought him Kim Yoonni.
Yeonjun hadn't expected much when his parents told him they were visiting his aunt's small beach house for the summer. His friends had teased him, telling him he'd be bored to death in a town with no arcades, no movies, and hardly any fun. But when he first saw Yoonni, he knew he'd remember this summer for the rest of his life.
It happened by chance on his first evening there. Yeonjun had been wandering the shore, his toes sinking into the wet sand, when he noticed a girl sitting on the rocks, sketching in a notebook. The evening sky was painted with hues of pink and purple, and she seemed to fit right in with the scene, as if she belonged to it.
"Hey," he called, trying not to sound as awkward as he felt. She looked up, and he felt his heart skip a beat. She had big, curious eyes that seemed to take in everything all at once.
"Hey yourself," she replied with a small smile, brushing a strand of her dark hair behind her ear. "Are you visiting?"
"Yeah, my aunt lives here," Yeonjun said, suddenly self-conscious. "I'm Yeonjun."
"Yoonni," she replied, offering her hand. It was the beginning of what would be their summer together.
