In less than a year, the world could be doomed. When Karasuma brings his daughter Kit to stay with him, he has no idea that this decision will turn not only her world but his own completely upside down. While Kit settles into her new surroundings fa...

They had all come: Kayano, Kanzaki, Okuda, and Kurahashi. Kit had invited them to the small forest near the school, and now they sat in a circle, waiting to hear why she'd called them together. "Thank you for coming," Kit began. Although they'd only known each other a few weeks, Kit liked them all and trusted them more than anyone else in the class. "There's something I want to tell you, and it's important to me that you're honest with me about it." They all nodded. "Okay. I know you're counting on my help with your mission to kill Korosensei." She paused, collecting her thoughts. "But I won't try to kill him. I know it's the right thing to do, but I can't do it - and I want to tell you why." She took a deep breath. "I was once there when someone was stabbed and shot. For a moment, I thought they were dead. It was so horrifying and has stuck with me so deeply that I just can't bring myself to handle a weapon. I'm the opposite of a killer. Korosensei will destroy the world if no one stops him, but it's so terribly cruel to take a life that I just can't do it." They all looked at her. Kit saw shock and empathy on their faces and knew she'd made the right choice. "That's horrible," Kurahashi said, finding her voice first. "I've never thought about it that way. I never considered what it would actually mean to kill him." "My father fears this story would discourage you from your goal. That's why he tries to avoid this discussion, but I'd like to know what you all think." "We're not children, and we never questioned the burden we were given. I, for one, won't be deterred, but I agree that we should still talk about it," Kayano said. "Yes, I feel the same way," Okuda agreed, and Kurahashi and Kanzaki nodded. They returned to the old school building, where the others were already changing for gym class. "Excuse me for a moment. I'll be back on time." Kit ran down the hall to the teachers' lounge and knocked. Korosensei seemed surprised to see her at the door. "What brings you here, Kitsan? Shouldn't you be at gym class?" "In five minutes," she replied, slightly out of breath. "Korosensei, I need to talk to you." "Good timing. I feel terrible for not giving you more attention as the newest student in the class. Have you settled in well?" Confused, Kit looked at his beaming face. Was this creature really planning to destroy the world? "Is Karmakun helping you prepare for the midterms?" "He's a slave driver," she said, "but yes. I feel much more confident." "Wonderful! Next week, I'll personally ensure that you all get fantastic results. I'll create so many duplicates of myself that I can study with each of you at the same time. It will be fun!" Kit wondered who would find that fun, but he seemed so pleased with his own idea that it was hard to stop him. "But you had something to discuss, Kitsan." Suddenly, he turned serious. "What did you want to talk to me about?" "Sensei, I have to tell you something: I can't kill you."
The next morning, they all sat together in the classroom, listening to Bitch-Sensei share her stories. She was a truly extraordinary woman, but as a teacher, she simply lacked practice - that was the nicest way Kit could put it. "Have you noticed how nice Bitch-Sensei is to you?" Kayano whispered beside her. Keeping her gaze directed forward, Kit barely shook her head. "She's totally in love with your dad." "What?!" Kit exclaimed loudly, but Bitch-Sensei seemed to take her outburst merely as an invitation for more elaboration on her rambling stories. "That can't possibly be true," she added much quieter. Kayano just shrugged. Could that be true? How could a professional killer fall for a loyal government official? Not to mention she walked around like a professional from a completely different field. "She's nice to me because I try hard to follow her lessons. And because I have a natural talent for languages. And..." "And because she's into your dad," Kayano finished her sentence and immediately got a reprimand from Bitch-Sensei. "See, she didn't snap at you." Kit rolled her eyes. If Kayano was right, the end of the world was truly not far off. "So, I think I've shared enough of my life with you for today," Bitch-Sensei concluded her lesson, fixing her hair, and reminded them once again to practice their French pronunciation as they were leaving. "Girls, if you want to learn how to wrap men around your finger, perfect your French skills." Kit suddenly felt a knot in her stomach. What a terrible thought that she might have been thinking about her dad. Fortunately, she barely had time to dwell on that thought, as Korosensei appeared in the doorway to continue his lesson. Surprisingly, he didn't say a word of greeting but wrote something on the board. Kit saw confused faces to her left and right; he had their full attention. When Kit looked forward again, Korosensei underlined the following words: The value of a life. She felt her pulse quicken; he had picked up on her concern. Now she wondered what would happen next. "What's that supposed to mean?" Terasaka asked, who, as usual, was being overly assertive. "Can't you read?" Karma shot back, but when Terasaka wanted to retort, Korosensei intervened. "I can tell you what that means." He paused briefly. "But wouldn't it be better if you found out for yourselves? It's a question that should concern all of you; after all, you're here in the Assassination Classroom to take a life, right? And a good killer is aware of what it means to kill. I want you to use this lesson to reflect on that. None of you should be able to say at the end of this year - if you manage to kill me - that you didn't know what you were doing." And so they spent this class discussing, arguing, and exchanging thoughts about life and death. It was surprising how honestly many of their classmates shared their own experiences and how much closer they suddenly seemed to each other. Kit let them know that she had been the trigger for this debate but held back on how personal her experiences were. Everyone could accept her problem with weapons, even though the discussions about it were very heated. In the end, everyone seemed to feel better - especially Kit. When they finally voted on whether they still wanted to kill Korosensei, everyone was still in favor and that reassured her father, who Korosensei had knowingly invited to this vote. Kit looked at her dad, tilted her head, and blinked her eyes like she used to when she was a little girl and had acted against his wishes, and just like back then, he couldn't help but smile.
"That was close." "Not even close." Kit, Karma, Nagisa, and Kayano stood by the window of their classroom, having just watched a failed attempt by Terasaka and his group. "Way too transparent," Karma said with a wrinkled nose. "If you really think he could have hit him, Nagisa-kun, then I've completely misjudged your killer instinct." "I just wanted to be nice." Nagisa looked a bit embarrassed. Kit liked Nagisa. She liked that he was always so kind, but sometimes he was selfless in a way that bordered on self-sacrifice. Hopefully, he would figure out what he was capable of and be proud of himself. "Hey!" Karma nudged her in the side. "Your dad is going on a trip with Bitch-Sensei. What's going on between those two?" "Stop it!" she retorted angrily. "Nothing is going on! You can save your insinuations. I know my dad well enough to know he would never fall for such superficialities." "That's how you can really get under your skin." He had that sadistic look in his eyes again, but when Kit wanted to turn to Kayano for help, she was already on her way home with Nagisa. "They could have at least said goodbye." "They did," Karma said, amused. "You would have heard it if you hadn't been so worked up. One more week. Are you ready?" he changed the subject. The lunch break was over, and they were starting the last week of their shared learning. "Always ready," she declared, slightly less ambitiously than she wished. Karma was good. He was even very good, but had she managed to absorb enough of his knowledge? "What if I totally fail?" "You won't." It sounded so self-evident coming from him. He looked at her - gently but piercingly - and she believed him. Suddenly, she felt oddly calm yet energized. "Is something wrong?" She must have been staring at him for a while, and now she realized she had forgotten to breathe. "Everything's fine. I'm just a bit nervous." "Why? You can't do worse than Terasaka." "Don't be so mean," she scolded him, but the tension slowly faded from her, and she was grateful to him for that. "You just have to endure me for one more week." He leaned back and clasped his hands behind his head. "After the exams, you'll be rid of me. Then you can manage on your own." "Hmm." The euphoric feeling was followed by such a sudden low that Kit startled herself, but this wasn't the right time to think about it further. "You're probably right. A bit of a shame, though. I had just gotten used to you." He closed his eyes and grinned. "I'm not disappearing. We're still in the same class." "Yeah, that's true." Everything that was currently running through her head could have been misinterpreted by him, so she left it at that and contented herself with pulling out her notebook. Just one more week.
