In a small, sunlit corner of the university courtyard, Irene sat at a table, buried in her books, trying to focus on her studies. The sounds of laughter and chatter filled the air, but she preferred the solitude, wanting to avoid the distractions that came with social interactions. That's when Danica approached her, her presence impossible to ignore.

"Hey, Irene," Danica said softly, her tone hesitant but warm. "Do you mind if I join you?"

Irene looked up, surprised to see Greggy's girlfriend standing before her. "Uh, sure," she replied, trying to mask her unease as Danica slid into the seat across from her.

"I wanted to talk to you," Danica began, fiddling with her fingers as she met Irene's gaze. "I've noticed things have been... different between you and Greggy since we got together."

Irene stiffened slightly at the mention of Greggy, her heart tightening at the memories of their friendship unraveling. "Yeah, I guess that's one way to put it," she replied, her voice lacking enthusiasm.

"I just want to say I'm really sorry for how he's acted towards you. It wasn't my intention to come between your friendship," Danica said, her expression earnest.

Irene sighed, her patience wearing thin. "You don't need to apologize for him, Danica. It's not your fault."

"But it is. I feel like I've taken him away from you, and that's the last thing I wanted," Danica insisted, her eyes searching Irene's for understanding.

Irene shook her head firmly. "You haven't taken him away from me. It was my decision to distance myself. I did it out of respect for your relationship. It's Greggy's actions that pushed me away, not yours."

Danica opened her mouth to protest, but Irene cut her off, her tone growing firmer. "Seriously, don't worry about it. I'm fine. You and Greggy have your thing, and I'm just trying to navigate my own path now."

"Irene, I just think it's sad," Danica said quietly, her tone laced with regret. "You two were such good friends, and I hate that it's come to this."

Irene felt a pang of sadness at Danica's words, but she refused to let it show. "Friendships change, Danica. People change. I just wish things could go back to how they were, but they can't. So, it's better this way."

Danica looked down at her hands, her expression one of sympathy. "I get that. I just hope you know I never wanted this. I'm here if you need to talk about anything."

Irene appreciated the sentiment but knew that it wasn't what she needed. "Thanks, but really, I'm okay. I have to focus on my studies anyway," she said, gesturing toward her books.

Danica nodded slowly, sensing the finality in Irene's voice. "Alright, I'll let you get back to it. Just know that I hope one day you and Greggy can find a way back to each other."

Irene offered a tight smile, the kind that didn't reach her eyes. "Yeah, maybe," she replied noncommittally, watching as Danica stood up and walked away.

As she returned to her studies, Irene couldn't shake the feeling of loss that lingered in the air. She had distanced herself out of respect for Greggy and Danica, but deep down, she mourned the friendship that had slipped through her fingers. The memories of laughter and shared moments felt like a distant echo, and all that remained was a bittersweet ache in her heart.

Greggy

As I pushed through another set of bench presses, the familiar rhythm of weights clanging around me blended with the thumping bass of the gym music. I focused on the burn in my muscles, trying to drown out everything else, but Leon's voice cut through the haze.
