The evening shadows lengthened outside James's apartment as he sat on the edge of his couch, staring blankly at the wall. It had been days since Mr. Carlson had cornered him, and the tension was beginning to wear on him. He felt like he was living on the edge of a cliff, unsure when he might finally lose his balance and plummet.

A knock at the door jolted him from his thoughts, and his heart skipped a beat. He half-expected Mr. Carlson to be there with another thinly veiled demand. But as he opened the door, he found himself face-to-face with Emma.

She looked both exhausted and resolute, her eyes red but determined. Her presence was like a shock of cold air, hitting him with a wave of guilt and fear. She crossed her arms, standing tall, and James sensed this wasn't going to be a simple exchange of words. He could feel the gravity of the moment, the unspoken ultimatum hanging in the air even before she opened her mouth.

"Can I come in?" she asked, her voice calm but steely.

James stepped aside, gesturing her in, though he felt his own nerves coil with dread as she entered. Emma walked in slowly, her gaze sweeping over the apartment as if she were taking in the remnants of their life together, a life that was now fractured beyond repair.

"Emma... I—" he began, but she held up a hand, silencing him.

"Don't," she said. "I don't want to hear another apology, James. I've heard them all. I just need you to listen this time." She took a steadying breath, her gaze piercing. "I came here because I need closure. And I need answers. Real answers, not the ones you think I want to hear."

James swallowed, his mouth dry. He felt as if he were being examined under a spotlight, every crack and flaw laid bare before her. "I'm... I'm listening."

Emma sat down across from him, her expression hardening. "I don't get it, James. I've thought about it over and over. I've asked myself what went wrong, what I did, what I missed. And I still don't understand why you chose him over me."

"It wasn't... it wasn't like that," he stammered, struggling to find the words. "It wasn't about choosing someone over you. It was complicated—"

"Complicated," she scoffed, her voice rising. "No, James, it's really not that complicated. You betrayed me. You went behind my back for months. You chose to lie to me every single day while you..." She paused, her voice breaking, but she quickly composed herself. "While you carried on with him."

James looked down, the weight of her accusations pressing into him. "I didn't want to hurt you. I was... I was confused. I didn't even understand it myself, Emma. Being with Tyler was something I didn't plan, something I couldn't predict."

Emma's eyes narrowed. "So what, James? It just 'happened'? That's the best you can give me?" She leaned forward, her voice hardening. "You have to make a choice, James. Because this limbo—it's killing me. Either you end things with Tyler and try to make amends, or you stay with him and accept that you'll lose me. For good."

The ultimatum hit him like a punch to the gut, and he felt the room spin as he tried to process her words. "Emma, please, I don't know if it's that simple. Tyler and I... it's not just a fling. I have feelings for him. But that doesn't mean I don't care about you. I'm torn."

Emma's face softened, and for a brief moment, he saw a flash of the person she'd once been with him—kind, understanding, the woman who had loved him unconditionally. But that softness quickly faded, replaced by a sadness so deep it cut him to his core.

"Torn?" she whispered, almost to herself. "James, I was supposed to be your partner, your rock. I loved you completely, without hesitation. And you've broken every bit of trust I ever had in you." She wiped a tear from her cheek, her voice wavering. "Do you know what it's like, lying awake at night, wondering why I wasn't enough? Why you couldn't just talk to me before you decided to tear our life apart?"

His throat closed up, and he felt the weight of his own guilt pressing down on him like a crushing force. "I know I messed up, Emma. I know I've hurt you in ways I can never take back."

Emma nodded, her jaw tight. "Then maybe the only choice you have left is to let me go."

A heavy silence settled between them, and James felt a pit open in his stomach, an emptiness he couldn't fill. He looked at her, desperation flickering in his eyes. "Emma, please... I need time to figure this out. This isn't easy for me."

Emma's expression hardened. "You've had six months, James. Six months to think, to decide, and every day you chose to lie to me. I won't let you string me along while you 'figure things out.' I deserve more than that."

James ran a hand through his hair, feeling the walls close in around him. The thought of losing her completely was terrifying, but so was the idea of cutting Tyler out of his life. Tyler was a different kind of love, one that had awakened something in him he didn't even know existed. But Emma... she was his foundation, his history, and a part of him couldn't imagine a life without her.

Emma stood, her face resolute. "I need an answer, James. End things with Tyler, and maybe, just maybe, we can find a way to work through this. Or don't, and accept that we're over."

He wanted to respond, but words failed him. His heart was a warzone, torn between the past and the present, between comfort and thrill, between love and desire.

Seeing his silence, Emma took a step back, her expression a mix of anger and resignation. "I'll give you until the end of the week. After that, I'm done. I won't wait forever, James. Make your choice."

Without another word, she turned and walked to the door, pausing briefly before stepping out. She didn't look back. The finality of her words echoed in the empty room, leaving James alone with his thoughts, his guilt, and his paralyzing indecision.

As the door clicked shut, James felt a hollow emptiness settle over him. The clock was ticking, and he knew that whatever choice he made would come with a price—a price he wasn't sure he was ready to pay.
