Ethan's heart raced as he packed his belongings in the quiet of his room. The night was heavy with silence, every shadow seeming to deepen as he prepared for the escape. His mind whirled with anticipation and fear, and the weight of what he was about to do pressed down on him. He was leaving behind his family, his responsibilities, the future that had been chosen for him since birth—all for the chance to be with Luca.

His hand lingered on the clasp of his cloak, the Cael family crest stitched into the fabric. For a moment, he felt a pang of doubt. His family had given him everything—status, privilege, purpose. Turning his back on that felt like a betrayal, a severing of ties that ran deep.

But then he thought of Luca's face, of the warmth in his gaze and the quiet strength that had given Ethan the courage to dream of a different life. He thought of the stolen moments, the whispered promises beneath the stars, and knew that he couldn't stay. The life he was meant to lead had become a cage, and Luca had given him a key to break free.

With a deep breath, he fastened the cloak around his shoulders, grabbed his bag, and slipped into the shadows of the estate.

When he reached the riverbank where they had arranged to meet, Luca was already waiting, his silhouette framed by the pale glow of the moon. He looked up as Ethan approached, a smile breaking across his face, warm and full of hope.

"You're here," Luca murmured, his voice soft, yet filled with a quiet certainty.

Ethan nodded, feeling a surge of emotion he couldn't put into words. "I couldn't imagine being anywhere else."

They shared a brief, intense gaze, both of them understanding that this was a point of no return. Together, they would face whatever lay ahead.

Ethan took a shaky breath, his fingers brushing Luca's. "Are you sure about this? Leaving everything behind?"

Luca's smile softened, and he nodded. "I've never been more sure of anything. With you, Ethan, I feel like I'm finally choosing something for myself."

A swell of warmth filled Ethan's chest, and he felt his doubts begin to melt away. They were no longer two people living in separate worlds; together, they were stronger, braver, and ready to build something new.

"Then let's go," Ethan said, his voice filled with a fierce determination. "Before I lose my courage."

Luca took his hand, their fingers intertwining, and they started to walk along the path out of Arvan. The night was cool, the air filled with the scent of grass and earth, the city's lights slowly fading behind them as they moved farther away.

But as they reached the edge of the city, a figure stepped out from the shadows, blocking their path. Ethan's heart froze as he recognized the tall, imposing silhouette, the cruel smirk that twisted Darian's lips.

"Going somewhere, cousin?" Darian's voice was cold, mocking, his gaze flicking between Ethan and Luca with a mixture of disdain and satisfaction. "I had a feeling you'd try something foolish like this."

Ethan's grip tightened on Luca's hand, his pulse pounding as he stepped forward, placing himself between Luca and his cousin. "Darian, let us go. This doesn't concern you."

Darian laughed, a harsh, bitter sound that echoed through the night. "Doesn't concern me? You're the heir to our family, Ethan. Do you really think I'm going to let you throw that away for... for him?"

Ethan's jaw clenched, his heart aching with both fear and anger. "I don't care about the family's legacy, Darian. This is my life. I have the right to choose what I want."

Darian's smirk faded, his expression turning cold and calculating. "You're a Cael, Ethan. Your life isn't just your own. Your duty is to our family, to uphold our name. And if you won't... well, perhaps it's time I took matters into my own hands."

He reached into his cloak, pulling out a dagger, its blade glinting in the moonlight. Ethan felt a surge of panic, his body tensing as he placed himself more firmly in front of Luca.

"Darian, please. You don't have to do this," Ethan said, his voice desperate. "I'll leave. You can tell the family I'm gone, that I'm never coming back. They don't have to know anything about Luca."

Darian's eyes narrowed, his grip tightening on the dagger. "Do you think I care about keeping your little secret?" His gaze shifted to Luca, his lips curling in a sneer. "This... commoner has no place in our world. I'm doing you a favor, Ethan, by ridding you of this distraction."

Before Ethan could react, Darian lunged forward, his dagger flashing toward Luca. But Luca was ready. He sidestepped the attack, grabbing Darian's arm and twisting it, forcing him to drop the dagger.

The blade clattered to the ground, and Ethan moved quickly, kicking it out of Darian's reach. Darian let out a furious snarl, struggling against Luca's hold, his eyes blazing with hatred.

"You think you can just walk away, Ethan?" Darian spat, his voice filled with venom. "You think you can turn your back on our family, on everything we've built?"

"I think I can," Ethan replied, his voice steady despite the fear coursing through him. "Because I'm choosing to live my life for myself, not for our family's twisted idea of loyalty."

Darian's eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint in his gaze. "You'll regret this, cousin. I'll make sure of it."

With a sudden burst of strength, he broke free from Luca's grip, stumbling back as he glared at them, his face twisted with fury.

"This isn't over," he snarled, his voice low and filled with a chilling certainty. "You may have won tonight, but I promise you, I'll find you. And when I do, you'll both pay the price for your defiance."

With that, he turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving Ethan and Luca standing in stunned silence.

Ethan's hands shook, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he looked at Luca, fear tightening his chest. "He won't stop, Luca. He'll keep coming after us."

Luca nodded, his expression grim. "I know. But we're not alone in this, Ethan. We'll be ready for him."

Ethan felt a surge of determination, a fierce resolve hardening within him. They had come too far to give up now, to let Darian's threats shatter the future they'd dreamed of. Together, they would find a way to protect each other, to build a life free from the shadows of their past.

He took Luca's hand, their fingers intertwining, and they began to walk again, their steps steady and sure as they left Arvan behind. The road ahead was uncertain, filled with challenges they couldn't yet see, but they were no longer afraid.

As they disappeared into the night, side by side, Ethan felt a sense of hope rising within him—a hope that, no matter what lay ahead, he and Luca would face it together, bound by a love that had defied the world. And as long as they had each other, he knew they could withstand anything.

The price of freedom was high, but for the first time in his life, Ethan felt it was worth it. They would build a new life, far from the city that had bound them, and they would do it together.
