" Mom!" I called out as soon as I walked in to the house " I'm back! Homie!" I said to the house." What's the time, Jo??" She asked as she peered her head out from the kitchen to look at me.
" 4:30pm" I answered staring at my wrist watch.
" What time did school dismiss?" She asked sternly.
" Some minutes ago " I lied heading to the kitchen. " What on earth is smelling this good? " I asked as I entered the kitchen, hoping I could change the topic.
" You still haven't answered my question, Jo " she said, turning to look at me.
I made a sad face" can you please just let it slide, I'm a little bit famished and arguing with you right now, is the last thing I would want to do, please " I said pouting my lower lip in a sad way.
" This isn't the first time you're returning from school late Jo, tell me, Are you seeing someone?" She asked, looking so curious and desperate.
I began to laugh.
I laughed for a while, ignoring the bewildered expression on her face"I wish I was." I managed to voice out as my laughter slowly died off." Really! So?, you just decided to keep on returning from school late, huh?" She asked with lifted brows.
" Nah"I shook my head in disapproval.
" What then? "
" I was watching the boys play football" I confessed.
" Got a crush on one of them? " She asked as she turned to check what she was cooking.
" No! " I denied instantly and changed the topic." What are you cooking?" I asked and put an arm around her shoulder peeping into the pot, as she added some seasoning cubes to the food.
" OMG! " I exclaimed, leaning away from her, my eyes not leaving the pot. " Are we expecting a visitor??" I couldn't help asking, cause it's obvious she's cooking way too much.
She nodded." I invited our new neighbor over for dinner"
" You did! " I exclaimed, smiling broadly, as excitement washed over me.
"Why the sudden excitement?" She asked with her eyes narrowed at me
" It's nothing" I replied. squinting my eyes, as I tried to mask my happiness with a stoic expression.
" It's obvious it's something Jo, tell me, did you really mean it, when you said you were gonna ride their son? "She demanded sternly.
" No, I didn't. I was just teasing you." I stated calmly.
" So? Why did you get so excited when I announced, they were coming over, huh??"She asked interrogatively." Is there something you aren't telling me?? "
" No " I lied.
" I just hope so " she sighed and turn to check what she was cooking.
" Whatever!"I muttered and walked out the kitchen.
Mom knows all my secrets as much as Vannie does but ain't gonna tell her this one.
Pushing behind my thoughts, I made my way to my room.
I quickly showered and got dressed in a blue short sleeved silk dress, that stops at my mid–thigh.
"I'm definitely wearing this to the party "I told myself, studying my reflection in the mirror.
The dress, looked so cute on me and I hope others notice that too.
" Welcome Mr and Mrs Evans!" I overheard Mom's voice, she sounded so happy as she welcomed them.
