"Where is she?"
Maya came busting into the ER of Grey-Sloan at a dead run, her eyes wide and her heart beating fast. Perry had radioed from the Aid Car that they were heading to the hospital and Maya hadn't even waited to hear the rest of his update as she bolted out of the station and down the three blocks in record time. Maya stopped and stared at Miranda, Teddy, Levi and Helm who were all waiting as Miranda grabbed Maya's hands.
"You beat them here Maya. They are still two minutes out. Damn how fast did you run?"
Maya started to bend over to catch her breath as the sound of the sirens grew closer. She straightened up and rushed back out to the bay as the Aid Car turned and lumbered down, swung in and around for the back to be facing the ER doors. Maya practically ripped the handle off as she opened the back of the Aid Car and looked inside. On the gurney was the TV news reporter Maya had seen interviewing Carina and standing over her, helping to administer CPR was her wife, bruised and bloodied.
"I need to get her to trauma one and she's going to need an ultrasound!"
Maya stared at her wife and reached out her hand to help Carina down as Perry and Nat lifted the gurney off the Aid Car and let Helm and Levi take over. Carina went to follow but stumbled as Maya grabbed her and held on.
"Carina! You're bleeding!"
"Yes I know and I've got a concussion, but I need to tend to my patient!"
Miranda grabbed the gurney that was wheeled out as Teddy held onto Carina's other arm and helped Maya guide her to the gurney.
"We'll make sure she gets taken care of, but right now we need to check you out. What happened?"
Carina went to protest lying down, prompting Miranda to speak up.
"Carina, please get on this gurney right now before your wife has a damned heart attack!"
Carina turned and looked at Maya who was staring at her unblinkingly and appearing to not even be breathing as Carina touched Maya's cheek.
"Breathe Maya, breathe. I'm ok, lo prometto. But I really do need to tend to Amy right now, she's-"
Maya blinked once as she narrowed her eyes and dropped her voice.
"Carina, get on this fucking gurney NOW!"
Carina's eyes went wide as she sat down and let Maya lift her legs up. Teddy and Miranda looked at each other as Maya kept her eyes on Carina and grabbed ahold of the side of the gurney.
"Let's go. My wife needs a CT scan."Maya was pacing outside the scanner room when Perry and Nat came up. She stopped and looked at them.
"What the hell happened?"
Nat swallowed hard as she explained.
"It was a mugging or an attack of some kind. We assessed them both and Perry began taking care of the TV woman. Your wife was unconscious but there didn't seem to be anything else except some bruises and the gash to the back of her neck from where the witness said he saw her get hit after she kicked one of them in nuts. I followed protocol and C-collared her before I cracked a pellet to see if I could wake her up. She did and barely let me finish her check over. She just ripped the collar off and started giving us orders on what to do. No offense Captain, but your wife is intimidating as hell so we did what she told us. I tried to get her to put the collar back on and at least sit quietly but she was speaking some Italian that honestly didn't sound like she wanted to be fucked with. I swear though, I tried."
Maya stared at both of them for a long minute before nodding her head.
"Thank you, you didn't do anything wrong and I appreciate you taking care of her. Get back to the station and you'll all be tagging on to Captain Herrera's squad until I'm back."
They headed down the hallway as Maya pulled her phone out of her pocket, scrolling through her contacts until she found Detective Lord's number and pressed the CALL button. Maya began pacing again as she waited for him to pick up."Ok Carina, you do have a mild concussion but I'm more concerned about these bruises. What happened in that alley?"
"We finished the interview and Amy's cameraman began packing everything up as we continued chatting. He finished and she told him he could go, so he did. She wanted a consult with me which lasted another I don't know, fifteen or twenty minutes and then we left together. Her car was in the opposite direction from mine so I offered to walk with her to her car and she said she'd give me a ride back to mine. We got down the street and these two men brushed by us. She made a comment about them being rude and the next thing I know, they grabbed us and pulled us into the alleyway. One of them just punched her and then started kicking her. I screamed for help and the one who was hitting her turned and came at me. I kicked him in the balls and he went down which made the one who had been holding me mad so he started hitting me. I heard a man's voice yelling at them and then felt pain in the back of my neck before everything went dark. I woke up to Maya's team hovering over us. I'll admit, I wasn't the nicest to them but I needed to get Amy here. She's in a...situation...so Teddy, can you please let me go and check on her?"
Teddy stared at Carina for a long moment before exhaling and nodding her head.
"Come on, I'll go with you. But we've got to go out through the back hallway. Miranda came in while you were getting scanned and said that Maya is pacing the front door like a caged tiger."The doors clicked and opened as Maya stopped pacing and watched Miranda come out. She stared past her and scrunched her eyebrows.
"Miranda, where's Carina?"
"She's fine, it's just a mild concussion and some bruising. Teddy is going to clear her but she insisted on going to check on that TV woman so Teddy went with her."
"Do you know what happened?"
"I'm not sure and that's the truth. All I know is that I'm happy she's ok."
Maya nodded as her phone started to ring. Miranda excused herself and headed back down the hall as Maya looked at it, smiled tightly and answered.
"Hey Katie, talk about timing. Do you think you could take a quick trip to Seattle?"
