Over the following days, Nora continued to regain her strength, her focus returning fully to the mission ahead. Yet, despite her attempts to keep things strictly professional, Cal’s flirtatiousness only grew. His touches lingered a bit longer; his teasing edged closer to something more intimate. There was an unspoken tension between them, crackling like a live wire.
One evening, they found themselves in the dim lighting of the observation deck, Cal sprawled on the sofa, watching her with that familiar smirk. Nora tried to ignore the heat of his gaze, concentrating instead on the console she was checking, but she felt his eyes follow her every movement.
“You’re still thinking about my little towel mishap, aren’t you?” he quipped, his voice low, almost a purr.
Nora’s cheeks burned. She hadn’t been, but she sure was now. “Why would I be?” she shot back, keeping her tone sharp but unable to meet his eyes.
“Maybe because you got quite the view,” he replied, clearly enjoying her embarrassment. “Can’t blame you for staring, honestly.”
Nora inhaled sharply, crossing her arms to keep her composure. “I was not staring.”
“Oh, but you were.” He leaned forward, eyes glinting with mischief. “Admit it, Nora. You liked what you saw.”
“I—” She tried to find a witty comeback but came up blank. She was flustered, helplessly red-faced as he laughed softly.
Before she could snap back, he reached out, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his hand lingering by her cheek. The touch was so gentle that it took her breath away. “You’re cute when you’re flustered,” he murmured.
Nora’s heart pounded, and she had to force herself to pull back. “Stop,” she mumbled, though her voice wavered.
Cal only chuckled. “Fine, I’ll give you a break—for now.”
But her thoughts, once he’d left the observation deck, weren’t as easily controlled. What if his words were more than just teasing? The weight of her own feelings started to surface, confusing her in a way she couldn’t ignore.
As they moved closer to their destination, Cal took her presence more for granted, his touch more familiar, his teasing bolder. She found herself caught between irritation and intrigue, that electric charge between them simmering just beneath the surface.
When the final day of her recovery arrived, she gathered the courage to voice the question that had been gnawing at her since that evening. In the silence of the observation deck, she asked him, “Cal… What are you expecting to happen between us once we land?”
He arched a brow, the smirk creeping back, but something more serious glimmered beneath. “Depends on what you want, Nora. But whatever it is, you should know—” He moved closer, just close enough for her heart to race again. “I’m not going anywhere.”
In that moment, with the stars framing them, the boundaries that had been blurring between them finally seemed to dissolve. It was a truth neither could deny, and as they stood there, so close, Nora knew they were both teetering on the edge of something neither one could take back.
