CHAPTER 6
NATALIE
"I'm on a mission here, Robert. So stay close to me," I tell him while getting out of the car and walking toward the building in front of us.
Luigi's office is located on the other side of the town, close to the harbor where the shipments from Mexico come in and out. He's the one in charge of the operations here.
"Always, Natty."
I enter the building with Robert by my side and head up the elevator that takes us to the third floor. As soon as I step out, I spot Luigi in the distance. His secretary is talking to him about something, and he's busy jotting it down in a notepad before handing it over to her.
"Luigi," I greet him with a smile, approaching him with a hand extended. "How's everything going?"
"Natalie," He seems a little surprised to see me here. "Good. How—what are you doing here?"
"Oh, nothing much. I just wanted to talk to you."
"Well," He looks around hesitantly and then turns to the door on the right. "Why don't we go inside and sit down?"
I follow him into his office. It's not very big but it has a desk and two chairs, one on each side of it. The room is decorated nicely and there's a large painting of the Virgin Mary hanging behind the chair.
Robert stays close to me as I take my seat.
"Papa send me to check on a few things," I take the documents from Robert before placing them over the table. "There were inconsistencies with the shipments that you've received. He wanted me to take a look and figure out what's wrong. There seems to be some discrepancies between the numbers that were recorded and the ones that were actually shipped. And the past two shipments have been delayed as well, even when I've spoken with Emilio and his men over at the border about them."
"Really? That's weird."
I nod. "Yes. We thought it was just a mistake at first but now it seems there's been some tampering going on with the books."
"Tampering?" His voice wavers slightly as he speaks, his eyes widening a fraction as he stares at the documents.
"Yes. The shipment records were altered and some of the weapons are missing as well. I've been through all the files and the documents that you sent to my father and everything seems to be fine there, except these two," I tap a finger over the files that show the discrepancies.
"I see."
He takes a moment to look at the files and I take a moment to look at him. This is easier than I think it is. He seems a little nervous and anxious. Something's not right.
"What do you think?"
Luigi shakes his head, his gaze flicking from the papers to me. "I have no idea. This is—this is strange."
I lean back against my seat. "Strange? I can't help but believe that there's someone messing around here."
He clears his throat and looks away, "Well, there have been a few new hires. Some new guys on the ground level—"
"New hires don't really have the clearance to go over these records, and neither do they have the courage to do anything more than what they are meant to." I stare him dead in the eyes.
"Well, maybe one of the other guys—maybe one of them is the one doing this," He stammers. "Maybe—maybe they are trying to—"
Robert clears his throat, catching Luigi's attention. I get up from my seat and take the documents that are on the table. There's no need to show them to Luigi anymore since he's the rat in the hole.
