"Where were you when I was being called immoral? Where were you when our child came into this world? Where were you when I was informed, two hours later, that our child had died? Do you have any idea how much I needed you at that time? Can you even imagine the pain I felt seeing my child's lifeless body? Was this your love, to leave me alone during my most painful moments?"
She spoke with intense anger, while he listened in silence because he knew she was releasing the burden of feelings she had held in her heart for a year, feelings she hadn't shared with anyone. He pulled her close, embracing her forcefully. She was uncontrollable, like a wounded lioness. He knew that no explanation of his would ever satisfy her.
"I was with you the whole time. Even when you were lost to yourself, I knew every detail about you. I never neglected you for a single moment. Being away from you was a necessity. I wanted to keep you away from the dangers connected to me. I know I wasn't with you in your tough times, but why do you forget that if you were the mother of that child, then I was its father as well. You held our child, felt it close, but I could neither see its face nor hold it. All I could do was visit its grave. Do you have any idea how painful that was for me? That child was mine, too. I was never neglectful of you or our child, but I stayed away to protect both of you. You could never truly understand my love. Even I don't fully know the depth of my love for you. If it hadn't been necessary, I would have never stayed away from you."
As he revealed his heart, she fainted in his arms.

She was enjoying the rain, twirling and skipping in the middle of the beautiful lawn, oblivious to everything around her. Suddenly, the weather changed dramatically as dark clouds filled the sky and a storm arose. She hadn't yet adjusted when she saw a large black snake a short distance away, coming toward her. Terror rooted her to the spot; she couldn't move or even scream. Just before the snake reached her, someone pulled her back and killed it. But before she could turn to see her savior, she woke up, her heartbeat pounding dangerously fast. It took her a moment to calm down, but she managed.
Lifting her head, she saw a trolley with gifts in front of her. She lay back on the pillow in irritation; this was becoming a regular occurrence. On any special occasion or exactly five days before her birthday, she would wake up to find gifts, and though the gifts weren't the problem, it was the sender who puzzled her. She had no idea who they were, but they seemed to know everything about her from A to Z.
Asking her mother was useless; she had memorized her mother's answer by now.
"They're from one of your father's friends."
The sentence was etched in her memory. Initially, these gifts didn't bother her, but now they not only irritated her but also sparked her curiosity.
Who was this friend of her father who never visited but always remembered to send gifts? When she asked her father, he would tell her that she was very close to these people, but she had no memory of it. Other than the Bhatti family, her next-door neighbors and family friends, she didn't communicate with anyone in her father's social circle. So, who were these people her father claimed she was so close to?
