The coffee shop on the corner of 5th and Main was one of the few places Spencer found a sense of calm. The endless parade of cases and crime scenes could easily wear down a person, but something about the warm scent of coffee and the quiet hum of conversation grounded him. He flipped through the pages of his latest book, mind running over facts and figures, immersing himself in a world that felt far from the horrors he dealt with daily.

That's when he saw her. She was sitting by the window, staring out at the city with a far-off look that intrigued him. Her hair was loose, cascading over her shoulders, and her fingers traced patterns along the side of her coffee cup. There was something hauntingly beautiful about her—a quietness that seemed familiar.

He didn't realize he was staring until she turned, catching his eye. Spencer felt a faint blush rise to his cheeks as he quickly looked down, but it was too late. She smiled—a small, mysterious smile that made his heart skip a beat.

"Good book?" she asked, her voice light yet carrying an underlying depth.

Spencer hesitated, fumbling with his words. "Uh, yes... yes, actually, it's on neurological conditions and their impacts on behavior. It's fascinating how much our brains influence... well, everything."

She laughed softly, a sound that was strangely comforting and unsettling at the same time. "You must be some kind of expert to understand all that. I'm Gwen, by the way."

He extended his hand, a bit unsure, and she took it, her grip firm yet gentle. "Spencer."

They talked for what felt like hours. She was quick, witty, and had a curious mind that matched his own. She asked questions that dug deep, her gaze intense and unwavering. But there was a coolness about her, a detachment that he couldn't quite place.

When they parted ways, Spencer couldn't shake the feeling that there was something different about Gwen. Something hidden. But it was that mystery that pulled him in even deeper.
