As the morning light streamed through the window, Harry stepped closer to Ava, a playful smile tugging at the corners of his lips. Leaning down, he brushed his lips softly against hers, waking her gently from her thoughts. The kiss was sweet, filled with a warmth that sent butterflies fluttering in her stomach.
“Good morning, sleeping beauty,” he teased, pulling back just enough to look into her eyes. “Did I just win the Best Wake-Up Call Award, or what?”
Ava laughed, still caught up in the lingering softness of his kiss. “If that’s the criteria, you’re definitely a front-runner,” she replied, a grin spreading across her face. “But you know, I was having a really profound moment contemplating our future as ethical scientists.”
“Oh, sorry to interrupt your philosophical musings,” Harry said, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “Should I go back to bed, then? I wouldn’t want to ruin your profound thoughts with my mere presence.”
“Don’t you dare!” she exclaimed, playfully swatting his arm. “I might need you to keep me grounded amidst all this idealism.”
He feigned a dramatic gasp. “Grounded? Who needs that when you can float on clouds of ambition and ethical dreams?”
“Touché,” Ava replied, laughing. “But seriously, I’m glad you’re here. I don’t think I could do this without you by my side.”
Harry’s expression softened. “Well, I’m not going anywhere. You’ve got me for the long haul—romantic kiss and all.”
“Good to know!” Ava said, her tone teasing. “But if I catch you sleeping on the job during our morning meetings, I might have to revoke your kiss privileges.”
“Harsh!” he exclaimed, pretending to clutch his chest in mock betrayal. “And here I thought I was winning you over with my charms.”
“Oh, you’re charming all right,” she said with a wink. “But a little more caffeine and a lot less sleepiness will do you wonders in these meetings.”
“Fair enough. How about this: I promise to stay awake and engage if you promise to keep waking me up like that,” he suggested, leaning closer once more, a playful gleam in his eye.
“Deal!” Ava replied, her heart racing at his proximity. “But I’ll also make sure to keep things interesting. Can’t have you getting too comfortable now, can we?”
“Interesting, huh? Is that code for you planning to make me solve equations in my sleep?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Only if you’re dreaming about them,” she shot back, grinning. “But really, I think we both know I’m the one who needs to keep things lively, while you provide the philosophical backup.”
“I like this teamwork,” Harry replied, a smirk dancing on his lips. “You handle the fun, I’ll handle the seriousness. We’re like the perfect balance of chaos and order.”
“More like chaos and cute,” Ava corrected with a laugh, nudging him playfully. “Just remember, it’s not just about getting the work done. It’s about enjoying the journey, too.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” he said, his tone shifting slightly as he gazed into her eyes. “But really, I’m just glad we’re doing this together. I never thought I’d find a purpose again, let alone one that makes me feel so alive.”
Ava felt her heart swell at his words. “You’ve always had purpose, Harry. Sometimes it just takes the right challenge to bring it out.”
“Maybe you’re right. And speaking of challenges, I heard we have a lot ahead of us,” he said, his voice growing serious again. “But with you leading the charge, I’m confident we can face anything.”
