Matt's hands trembled as he closed the file Marie had given him, his mind swirling with the damning pieces of Claire's betrayal. Claire had been siphoning money from their shared account—not just for lavish dinners and gifts but to fund a life he'd known nothing about. With each revelation, the woman he thought he knew morphed into a stranger, a figure cloaked in deception.

Back in the quiet of his apartment, Matt began digging deeper, combing through bank statements, receipts, and texts with a new understanding. The pattern was undeniable. Payments he had initially assumed were for utilities or shared expenses were, in reality, covering the cost of someone else's life—her ex's life.

It all clicked together when he found a single payment description from three months prior. Claire had sent a large transfer under the vague label "loan repayment" to a secondary account. This wasn't just her ex's name; it was the same account Marie had linked to her mysterious transactions.

Why would she be funneling money to someone she'd left behind? And why hadn't she simply asked him for a loan openly?

The question gnawed at him, leading Matt to seek out more answers. Desperate for clarity, he called Marie back, asking her to trace any connections between Claire and her ex beyond financial ties. His curiosity had turned to obsession, and he felt as though he were peeling away layers of a meticulously constructed facade.

A few days later, Marie contacted him with more information. "It looks like Claire's been financially tied to her ex for at least a year. I managed to pull up some documentation connecting her name to several of his assets—an apartment, a car, even a business account under a shell company."

Matt was floored. "She's been supporting him? Is that what all this has been about?"

"It's deeper than that," Marie said, her voice tinged with gravity. "They're not just exes. She's legally bound to him through these assets. From the outside, it appears as though she's been living a double life, with her finances interwoven with his."

As Matt sat in stunned silence, Marie added, "I did some digging on the ex, too. He's had a troubled past—debts, failed businesses, legal issues. It's highly likely that Claire was bailing him out, keeping him afloat at the cost of your relationship."

The revelation hit Matt hard, but it also gave him a grim clarity. Claire hadn't just betrayed him emotionally; she'd deceived him financially, funneling his trust and resources into a second life he hadn't been part of. All the late nights, the "emergencies," the excuses—they had been cover-ups for her other life.

That night, Matt resolved to confront Claire once and for all. He texted her, asking if they could meet at her apartment, his message blunt and urgent.

When he arrived, she opened the door cautiously, her face tight with tension. "Matt, what is it? This late... what could be so urgent?"

He pushed past her into the apartment, not caring about the restrained courtesy she feigned. "How long have you been lying to me, Claire?" he demanded, holding up a stack of printed bank statements and Marie's findings. "This," he said, throwing the pages onto her coffee table. "It's all here. I know you've been supporting your ex, using our money—my money—to cover his debts and keep his life afloat."

Claire's expression faltered for just a moment before her calm mask slipped back into place. "You went through my finances?" she said, her voice laced with disdain. "I didn't realize you were keeping tabs on me like that."

"Don't turn this around on me!" Matt snapped, his anger rising. "I trusted you, Claire. I trusted that we were building something real. But you were lying to me, over and over. You've been playing me for a fool while using me to fund some messed-up double life with him."

Claire crossed her arms defensively. "You don't understand, Matt. He needed help. I was just... doing what I could."

"By draining our shared funds?" Matt asked, his voice incredulous. "And lying to me about it the entire time?"

Her face twisted with an unfamiliar anger. "You wouldn't understand. You're so controlling, so sure of what's right and wrong. I didn't want to tell you because I knew you wouldn't help him. He's been through so much, and I... I owed him."

"Owed him?" Matt's voice was tight, disbelief laced with resentment. "After everything we've built, you still felt obligated to him?"

"It's not that simple," Claire said, her voice wavering. "You think relationships are about love and loyalty, but sometimes it's about survival, about doing what's necessary."

Matt's mind reeled. The woman standing before him was no longer the person he'd fallen in love with. She was a stranger, someone capable of calculated betrayal wrapped in feigned justifications. He took a step back, the weight of their relationship unraveling in that moment.

Claire, sensing his retreat, softened her tone. "Look, I never wanted to hurt you. I... I thought I could manage both, keep everything separate."

"But you couldn't, Claire," Matt replied, his voice hollow. "You can't keep secrets like this and expect to build a life with someone."

For a long, painful moment, they stood in silence. Finally, Matt turned and headed toward the door, the realization that their relationship was truly over settling heavily on his shoulders.

"Goodbye, Claire," he said quietly, not looking back. And with that, he left, leaving behind not just her apartment but the illusion he'd clung to for so long.
