As the rain pounded on the car, a flash of lightning struck a tree just ahead of them, causing it to fall and block the road. Hannah, the driver, swerved to avoid the tree, but the car skidded on the wet road and tumbled down a steep embankment. They crashed into the woods below, the car resting precariously against a large boulder. The three women were battered and shaken, but miraculously, they were alive.
However, their ordeal was far from over. The car was too damaged to move, and they had no cell phone signal. As night fell, the storm showed no signs of letting up. Cold and injured, they knew they couldn’t stay in the car all night—especially with the possibility of landslides from the rain-soaked mountains.
It was Agatha, the most level-headed of the group, who suggested they leave the car and try to find higher ground, hoping for cell service or a safer place to wait out the storm. Though they were terrified, they agreed. With only a small flashlight and their wits, they set off into the dark, treacherous wilderness.
The forest was a maze of slippery rocks, mud, and fallen branches. Victoria, usually the most adventurous, was the first to slip, twisting her ankle in the process. She urged them to leave her behind, but neither Hannah nor Agatha would hear of it. They created a makeshift crutch and supported her as they pushed forward.
