SAN ANTONIO TEXAS
OCTOBER 17th 2023Zara didn't know what had gotten into her these last couple of days. Ever since that kiss with David in the guest room, she'd been stuck on him, replaying the moment and missing the feel of his lips on hers. She hadn't planned on it, but something about him had her feeling all kinds of ways she couldn't shake.
"Zara, girl, are you even listening to me?" Lani's voice snapped her out of her thoughts. They were riding together on their way to Chick-fil-A to grab some food for themselves, Naylor, and David.
"Oh, um, yeah... what was you sayin'?" Zara replied, trying to act natural.
Lani laughed, "I was sayin'... David laid it down on me, and I guess I ain't mad at him no more."
"He did what?" Zara asked, caught off guard and a little thrown.
"Girl, we had sex. I know you been tellin' me to talk to him, and I finally did. We had a whole convo, and one thing led to another," Lani said, pulling into the Chick-fil-A parking lot with a satisfied smile.
"When was this?" Zara asked, her mind racing.
"The night of Naylor's party, why?" Lani said, glancing over. Zara froze same night David had kissed her.
"Oh... uh, no reason. I'm just... happy y'all are finally talkin' again," Zara replied, forcing a smile
Zara and Lani grabbed their bags of food, each lost in their own thoughts as they headed back to Lani's house. Zara was still stuck on that kiss with David, her mind swirling with confusion and a little guilt. She wanted to be happy for Lani, but part of her just felt... weird. She didn't know what to do with these feelings.
When they walked in, the familiar sounds of a video game filled the living room. David was in his usual spot on the couch, locked in on his PlayStation 5, headset on, fingers flying over the controller. Naylor, their little brother, was sprawled out on the floor, coloring in a picture with intense focus.
Lani walked over to David, a smirk on her face, and without a word, she slid the headset right off his head. "Boy, you betta pay attention when your wife walks in with food," she teased, leaning down to give him a quick kiss.
David grinned, pulling her close for a second before she straightened up, holding up his food. "Yeah, yeah, I'm grateful. You know I'm starvin'," he said, reaching for the bag.
Zara watched the interaction, the little twist in her stomach growing. She tried to shake it off, turning her attention to Naylor instead. She handed him his kid's meal, ruffling his hair as he looked up with a big grin. "Here ya go, lil' man."
"Thanks, Zara!" Naylor chirped, already digging into his fries.
Zara smiled at him, but as soon as his attention was back on his food, her smile faded. She didn't feel like sticking around. She had told Lani she'd spend the day with her, but now... she didn't know if she could handle it. She walked into the kitchen, setting her food down on the island and opening her drink, stirring her straw aimlessly as her mind wandered back to that night with David. Part of her wanted to leave, but she didn't want to make things awkward.
